Win XP does not recognize installed IE version

I am running Win XP (SP2). I use the IE from Microsoft (MS). The
version installed (under "Help", "About IE") is 6.0 SP2.

There some sites (e.g. Office Upgrade from MS), when doing an
automated upgrade, that report "Warning: You are viewing this page
with an unsupported Web browser. This Web site works best with
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 or later or Netscape Navigator 6.0 or
later".

I tried to (re)-install IE using the ie6setup.exe file. This reports
"Setup has detected a newer version of IE already installed on this
system. Setup cannot continue" and then ends normally.

Then I tried to install an IE upgrade (Q831167). This on the otherhand
reports "This update requires IE 6.0 SP1 to be installed".

To make matters more complicated, I use MS Messenger and when I want
to pick my mail I get the online message "You are using a web browser
that Hotmail does not support. If you continue to use your current
browser software we cannot guarantee that Hotmail will work correctly
for you."

I cannot remember what lead to this issue (I have however used some
registry cleaners.)

Any advice?

I have the same exact problem on my computer...let me
know if you find out how to correct it!
