WIN XP crashes - event log has no information

Hi. My computer has locked up three times in the past day. This is highly
irregular behavior for my PC. I opened the event log to see if I could find
out what was causing the crash. When I right clicked on the properties of
the detailed event, the message stated "No properties are available on this
object". I checked a couple of different events and the same message keeps
popping up. The entire Event Log is corrupted. The same is true for the
Security and System logs.
The main symptom is my computer is crashing. I am sure the missing log
files are part of the answer to this conundrum.
I guess the order of repair should be: (1) System Restore (2) run the
check disc utility (3) run the repair utility on the Windows XP installation
CD.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks, Jim
