Event Viewer - Application Log

Greetings to all and thanks in advance.....

I'm having a reoccuring error message in the application log on XP-home.
From what I can see in the log it appears that it could have started after
the NEW pc had a copy of Encarta 2004 installed (it came with the PC, a
compaq).

The other thing I've noticed is that the error is logged everytime a user
logs onto XP. But not always.

The first error message was preceded by a success message from the ".NET
Runtime Optimization Service". Here's that event -

..NET Runtime Optimization Service (clr_optimization_v2.0.50727_32) -
Completed all work. Shutting down.

Then about 12hrs later is the first of many, many, many .NET error messages.
Here it is -

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( .NET Runtime ) cannot be
found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or
message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be
able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and
Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Unable
to open shim database version registry key - v2.0.50727.00000

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( .NET Runtime ) cannot be
found.

Means that .NET Runtime does not have any info to send to the Event Viewer
or not enough info. So the Event Viewer shows a message like above and just
confuses most people.

Don't worry about events like that one.

Thanks for the info, so that means .NET sends the event for no reason? I'm
suprised that a minor "fix" like that would be left out of the updates.

What about this part of the error -

Is it possible to track down the app or whatever that's causing it?

No. Nobody or Windows knows why, .NET had something happen, but the Event
Viewer has no idea. So there is no reason for you to worry about an
unknown. Nothing you can do. Basically .net is not playing well with the
Event Viewer, it's keeping secrets. ;-)

IMHO, it's a waste of time. I personally think .net is .crap and I don't
have any of it on my machine.
