I hope microspft comes up with an update to address the
win-eto/here4search.com hijack. The browser reset doesn't
stick, and I can't send a suspected spyware report
because of a problem with non-existant proxy settings

Keep trying to send the report, please. There appears to be
an issue with the servers you're attempting to connect to.
The error message you cite is a common one, so far.

In addition to Steve Wechsler's advice, you might also try scanning in safe
mode.

If you are not the family whose PC I fixed the same
problem on this morning then send me your HijackThis Log.

Get HijackThis.exe from
http:/www.tomcoyote.com/hjt/HijackThis.exe

Save it then Open it and SCAN your system then SAVE LOG
and send me the HijackThis log as an attachment. You can
try just copying it and pasting it into a reply but I
might not see it. I should be able to identify the
problem and tell you how to get rid of it for good.

Bet the log has a line in it:
