Win-98SE & IE 6 -Compatable Yet ??

M

Mike Mc

I am passing on this system and buying a new XP system.

I installed I.E. 6.0 when it first came out and had so
many problems that I had to reformat and re-install
windows 98 SE.
There was no way to "Roll-Back" to I.E. 5.5.

I also had a similar problem with any IE 5.5 SP after Nov.
2002 as they include XP files.

But, with 2 SP in IE 6, can WIN-98 users, who HAD problems
with the initial release, say they have no problems at all?
When I pass this on I want them to have the latest MS
features as this will be their first PC.

Thanks in advance
Mike Mc

IE6-SP1 has been working quite nicely on the vast majority of Win98/Win98SE
boxes since its release about a year ago, especially when it's fully
up-to-date with Windows Update patches.

This simply isn't true. I wrangled with W98SE and IE6 on three separate
occasions on three different computers on my network, and the pairing never
was acceptable.

First, IE6 upsets the Windows shell and causes major problems when moving or
deleting large numbers of files together in WinExp. As a digital
photographer I do this routinely and in WinExp the process started with slow
operation and eventually progressing to a crash. Doing the same operation
in DOS caused no trouble. M$ is aware of the problem, since I and at least
one other person have informed them, but they are unwilling or unable to
produce a fix.

Second, IE6 would crash at least every two days, something only rarely
experienced with IE 5.5. In each of the three tries, the last being SP1,
reverting to 5.5 always cleared up the problems. See this link for more on
this issue: http://aumha.org/elist/trenches.htm

At this point I've moved on to WinXP Pro on all three machines and all is
well with this OS and IE6.

Many Win98 users did indeed have this and other problems...with IE6.
IE6-SP1 resolved most of them for the vast majority of users, IMHO.

Jim and I still disagree on the current situation where IE6-SP1 (fully
updated) is paired with Win98(SE). Your crashes were no doubt caused by the
buggy version of Mshtml.dll included in Q810847/Feb. '03 CumPatch. This was
corrected in Q813489/April '03 CumPatch and even further by Q818529/June '03
CumPatch (which also included updated Urlmon.dll and Shdocvw.dll files).

I've had mixed success running IE6 SP1 on WIN98SE, plus all current critical
updates for both. On one machine some sites print out what looks like
debugging information at the top, although most are OK, also some
pop-up-type windows open blank. Some sites, like EBAY, are especially
ill-bahved. Yet on the other WIN98 machine all works OK. Both machines are
using the same DSL router, and are running the same Zone Alarm software. Is
this possibly a registration problem with IE components, or some obscure
setting in internet options (yes, I've tried setting default behavior).

thanks,

Phil
