Win 98 with XP Upgrade ?

My machine came with Windows 98 which I upgraded to Win XP HE and I have the
CD. Is it possible to install XP HE on a slave drive using just this CD?
Will there be a conflict if the master drive has the OS and a second copy of
the OS is on the slave drive?

John, is it your intention to create a dual boot with both OS's? You can
install XP separately on the slave drive but you will
need a valid Win98 CD. Disconnect the white power connector to the
original drive before doing this. If you want a dual
boot situation just start the Install from WinXP on the original drive.
Select New Install>Advanced. This will give you the
option to install XP on the other drive. When install is finished you
will have a Menu to choose from at boot between the
two different XP's. Check here for some more info

I have in my boot menu WinMe, Win2KPro, WinXPme, WinXPwife
and eight different Linux OS's. but then I'm
a little wacky.

Mine is a related WIN ME issue. My desktop came with ME and I upgraded to XP
Home. Now I would like to clean up the system and reinstall XP clean. Can I
do that with the XP Upgrade CD?

Yes, if you have an Me CD.

The requirement to use an upgrade version is to *own* a previous qualifying
version's installation CD (with an OEM restore CD, see below), not to have
it installed. When setup doesn't find a previous qualifying version
installed, it will prompt you to insert its CD as proof of ownership. Just
insert the previous version's CD, and follow the prompts. Everything
proceeds quite normally and quite legitimately.

You can also do a clean installation if you have an OEM restore CD of a
previous qualifying version. It's more complicated, but it *can* be done.
First restore from the Restore CD. Then run the XP upgrade CD from within
that restored system, and change from Upgrade to New Install. When it asks
where, press Esc to delete the partition and start over.

Thanks, Ken.
One more question. Will I need format my harddrive before I do this or will
the upgrade disk do that for me as part of the new install?
Thanks.

You're welcome. Glad to help.

No need to format first. Just boot from the Windows XP CD (change the BIOS
boot order if necessary to accomplish this) and follow the prompts for a
clean installation (delete the existing partition by pressing "D" when
prompted, then create a new one).
