Win 3.1 Prog under W2kProf

I have an old language tutor (Linkword not supplied by current owners
of the name) that runs under W3.1/95+98 but will not even load under
W2Kprof.

One of the items on the MS site would suggest that:-

start /separate "setup"

were "setup" is the Linkword install program might cause it to install
and run. The program requires access to the sound card.

I would prefer not to duel boot but are there any other options?

A bit more research and it seems I need some sort of virtual machine VM
or Virtual PC?

Are there any good open source one's available? need to host win 98.

Google "Windows 2000 Compatibility Mode"
http://www.google.com/search?q=Windows+2000+Compatibility+Mode

returns in 1st position:

"How to Enable Application Compatibility-Mode Technology
in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2"
http://www.activewin.com/tips/win2000/1/2000_tips_43.shtml

From my memory, that Compatibility Mode was running
as correctly for Win 3.1 programs as for W9.x ones.
