Win 2000 Pro

Rick

I have currently reloaded win 2000 pro. Trying to get on
the internet via cable modem. I set everything up
correctly { i think} I push IE and it says can't find
server. I am sending out info but my computer or card
isn't getting anything back. This was the problem before I
reloaded 2000 Pro also. Bought a new network card.. Nope
still does it. Any help? Could it be anything on the
board. ABIT. Biggest thing it's not mine, wife's sisters.
I rehook the cable to my computer and the internet works
great...

Alittle help please!!!

Could be the problem with board, or could be the problem
with IP settings. Are you able to ping your gateway? Are
you using static IPs or DHCP? Are you able to self ping
yourself? Machine basically is generating internet
requests but you are not getting a reply from anywhere. Is
your NIC showing 0 received packets?
Give me detailed info on above asked questions.

Yes that is right no packets received. The cable guy said
he found his IP address but couldn't do anything after
this. I am not sure how to ping myself. I beleive its a
static IP. How do I ping my gateway? I build some
computers on the side {no expert} but this is over my
head. If you explain I know I can do it. Sorry. email

When connected, go to command prompt. START RUN, CMD and
hit enter. On the prompt type ipconfig
You will see your IP and gateway there. Then use the pint
command to first ping your own IP and then ping your
gateway. Also try to ping machines around you in the same
way.
Ping is a command that will let you check connectivity
between your machine and specified machine.
A Request timed out means you couldnt establish connection
between your machine and specified machine. A reply means
specified machine responded back to the request that was
sent from your machine.

ok I will give it a try. I have been in there before on my
PC but not hers. If this comes back bad, I will take it
that the motherboard has gone bad since it's a new NIC
card. Also changed PCI slots on it, to make sure it wasn't
a problem with this one slot. Thanks a bunch!!!

The IP address shows up but no Gateway address. I have now
reloaded win 2000 again from scratch, still no internet.
Sends Packets but doesn't receive any. So I guess I am
leaning towards the motherboard now. What do you think???

Bring it down to basics!

Does the link light on the NIC show when the cable is plugged in?

Are you using the correct cable between your PC and the cable modem? (Crossover)

Are there any firewalls between the modem and the PC?

Have you set the TCP/IP setting of the netwrok connection correctly? (static or DHCP)

If it is static are you using the correct subnet mask?

Post back anwers and then we can go further.

yes the nic card blinks. new card also.sends out packets
but doesn't receive any back.
Yes correct cable, switch cable back to my PC and it works
fine. been on cable for 3 years now.
No firewalls
Auto set of TCP/IP settings- obtain automatically.
never heard of a subnet mask I assume I am not using it.

yeah we don't have to do that. as long as your mac id from
the modem is correct. I have to give them my MAC ID from
the back of the cable modem and that is is. I usually use
a router also so they never see me connected. I am in
North Carolina, USA. Thanks alot for looking and trying to
help.

Ok.

I am not sure where you are, I am in the UK, but how is
your PC authenticated to the network?
Over here you have to register the MAC address of the NIC
with the ISP. If you are using a new network card and
this rule applies have you registered the MAC address of
the new card?
It sounds like you are connecting to the netwrok but not
been authenticated hence not receiving any packets back
from your broadcast.

yeah using the drivers from the disk. Might see if any
news are out there. Thanks for the help.

No problem Rick,

I notice from reading your past posts that you have re-
installed W2K with the new network card. What drivers did
you use for the NIC?
Did you let W2K install it's own? If so you may want to
try installing the drivers from the NIC disk or preferably
downloading the latest ones form the card manufacturers
site.
I have had this before where W2K says the drivers are
working properly but when updated they work definatley.

Rick,

From previous comments you say that when you run 'ipconfig' there is no gateway listed but there is an IP address. Is the IP address a private one or public? It may only be showing the local loopback address of the NIC. (127.0.0.1)

Could you do a ipconfig /all instead and see if there are any DNS servers listed?
