Will this work? Download program on XP and install it on Win7.

I want to buy a portable with win7. I would like to keep it
off the net until I install a few programs: ZoneAlarm
firewall, Panda Cloud security, Spyware Blaster and perhaps
a few more.

Will this scheme work? On my XP (MCE), I will download the
programs, and instead of having them run and install, I'll
save them to a finger drive and execute then on the new
portable win7.

Will this work? Or is there a problem with downloading
under XP and installing under Win 7.

Yes, it should work. I have done that with some big downloads,
downloading them at work to a USB stick, which I then carried home.

Just be careful which version of everything you download. Some sites
sniff our your computer's configuration, so you want to be sure
you're not getting a 32-bit XP version of something instead of a 64-
bit Windows 7 version.

You have to watch out - occasionally, certain web-site download pages will
'detect' which OS you are running and not give you a choice over the
OS-specific version you receive when you click on the 'download' link on a
page (Microsoft does this allot).

At other times you will be given a choice of different OS versions
(platforms) that a program has been designed to work on. - So be attentive
to exactly what you are downloading, and, if necessary, look for a link
titled "System Requirements" - just to be sure....

And don't some programs just download an installer, which when run
will then access the internet to download the actual program? I've
certainly noticed internet traffic when installing some programs or
updates, and some installers seem quite small considering the program
being installed.

It means of course that when you run the installer on the new portable
it won't work unless it has an active internet connection.

You are quite right.... Some installation (setup) program files are, in
fact, just "download/installer" programs, and *not* the whole "full"
install application.

Microsoft do this quite allot - when the file-size of the "full" installer
is over a certain amount, the common chosen method of distribution is for
them to use just the "downloader" version.

Two examples are;

1). Microsoft Dot.Net Framework Version 3.5
Setup
dotnetfx35setup.exe = Downloader / Installer = 3 MB (2.82mb)
dotnetfx35.exe = Full Redistributable = 200 MB (197mb)

2). AVG Free Edition 9.0 Setup
avg_free_stb_all_9_40_cnet.exe = Downloader / Installer = 870 KB
(0.85mb)
avg_free_stf_en_9_40.exe = Full Redistributable = 165 MB (165mb)

.....but this still is not the same as a web-page "auto-detecting" your
Operating System and downloading the appropriate version for the OS on the
current machine.

As I mentioned earlier, it's then a case of paying attention to look for
links to download software versions for other platforms (other OSes) other
than the one currently running.

Plus having to make sure you *are* downloading the "ful" installer if you
do have any issues with internet connection on the computer ultimately
destined for the downloaded software.
