Why do I only get sound but no video using Powerpoint?

I have an AVI clip that plays perfectly in Windows Media Player. However,
when I insert the AVI clip into PowerPoint, I only hear the sound but do not
see the video in my slide show. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

First step place the avi and presentation in the same folder preferably
directly on the hard drive eg C:\ppts and REINSERT the video. This makes sure
that the path length is not too long. If it still doesnt work try downloading
windows media encoder and using the convert function to create a wmv with a
standard codec and see if that runs.

I have wmv files loaded in the folder directly and I only get sound but no
moving video...just a black square where the video should be. they play
independently but not in the presentation slide. Any suggestions? I've
tried all of the possible fixes liste this forum accept reinstalling PPT.
