powerpoint cannot display this type(.avi) of sound or movie

Attempting to insert a .avi film clip into powerpoint and receive the
following message " cannot display this type of sound or movie". Movie plays
on media player when used trouble shooter suggestions powerpoint play sound
but left picture black.Any suggestions on what to do or what to convert file
to.

First - powerpoint doesnt actually use media player to play videos.

A fair test is in windows

Start>run type in mplay32.exe and see if the video worksthere. If not the
problem is probably that another program (real player, video editor or
something else has modified the settings.

You may be able to try a quick fix of changing the file extension from .avi
to .mpg
Ignore the dire warning!!

Cant see the .avi extension??
In windows explorer>folder options>view untick "hide file extensions for
known file types"

attempted to play in media player and received the message "video not
available, cannot find 'vids:mjpg' decompressor" the sound plays but video is
just a screen with message and diagional lines.
same occured when changed extension.
