Why can't Vista see other computers

W

Wyman

I may have hijacked another post with my problem and I do apologize so I'll start a new topic.

I'm having trouble getting my Vista Ultimate desktop to see the XP machines
and vice versa. The XPs see each other fine. I'll copy and paste all the info I'm sure you'll need below
but let me say right now that the browstat wouldn't run on the Vista PC.
When I opened to text file it was empty. Also, you'll notice in the
ipconfig that it says NetBios over TCPIP is disable but it's not. I have no
idea why it says disabled (see pic)
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c192/smileychgo/TCP_IPsetting.jpg. This
is gonna be lengthy so please forgive me. No firewalls are installed and the one in Windows has been disabled.

Wy,

OK, what you have to work on is the NetBT issue on Vista. IPConfig, and both
Net Config, logs show that NetBT is not active.

Try CDiag, run on all 3 computers.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-cdiag-without-assistance.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-cdiag-without-assistance.html

And run "browstat status" on Vista, in a command window started AS ADMIN, and
see what error you get.

Hi Chuck,

I'll do that tonight when I get home. I tried running the browstat on Vista
as admin and still came out with a blank file. It was empty. It was easier
to place the file on the desktop and run it that way so that's the way I ran
in case you're interested.

Wy,

OK, what you have to work on is the NetBT issue on Vista. IPConfig, and
both
Net Config, logs show that NetBT is not active.

Try CDiag, run on all 3 computers.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-cdiag-without-assistance.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-cdiag-without-assistance.html

And run "browstat status" on Vista, in a command window started AS ADMIN,
and
see what error you get.

Control Panel ( Classic View) ==>Network & Sharing Center==>

Set Network Discovery ON.
Set File Sharing ON
Set Password Protected sharing ON

Place cursor on Network. Double click.
After a short while you should see all the computer on your network.

Keep double clicking on the computers.

If you need to do Printer sharing, make sure you enabled Printer sharing on the previous pane but first you must see the printer's image in the last window.

You will not be able to do any of these unless you first forced your XP to reciprocate.

In XP you will have to set up network shares for ALL users or only for your selves as administrator. It is also possible that you will need to elevate yourselves in Vista to the level of an administrator. Remember, you are not an administrator yet.

Open Command Prompt and run it "as administrator" Type lusrmgr.msc. It will give you a GUI: Local Users and Groups. Click on Groups thumbnail. In the Left pane find the group "Administrators" Add yourselves to this group. Close the GUI.

Enjoy your networking.

Forget about ipconfig.

Forget about NetBios.

Forget about NetBT.

If you are related to Jane Wyman I should say that I enjoyed her in a movie the other night: Let's do it over again. Do it over again with your LAN.

I may have hijacked another post with my problem and I do apologize so I'll start a new topic.

I have a similar problem. can see my xp computers from windows vista
machine, but can't access them (i click on the computers and get a message to
enterusername and password--i do and it says, incorrectly, that they are
wrong).

but what do you mean by this:

"In XP you will have to set up network shares for ALL users or only for your
selves as administrator"

if i can see the shared folders on the xp machine from another exp machine
the network shares must be set up, no?
and why all users. several of my user accounts (the ones i am trying to use
on vista) are identical on vista and xp (same username/password). but i have
accounts which i don't use on the xp machines that are not on the vista
machine. that shouldn't make a difference, should it?

I want to disclaim myself that I am not a sure expert on anything. I am a
heavy user though, and I do not mean alcohol or drugs.

There is a GOOD chance that Vista does not take you seriously at all. The
fact that you paid 3 grand for this machine does have some relevance but you
have to establish it. You have to establish yourselves a one.

This is what you do (if you haven't already done it). You open Command
Prompt as "run as administrator" which gives you temporarily the rights of
the Administrator (and the administrator is an OBJECT in your machine). Then
you type lusrmgr.msc and do Carriage Return. You will see a GUI where you
will see in the Left Pane the Group thumbnail. Double click on it and in
the Right pane you will see a bunch of Groups. You should add yourselves to
the first Group: "ADMINISTRATORS." Note that there is already one member in
that group: Administrator--again it is an object not you. After you added
this name you may close the GUI or you may try to examine other groups.

There is a group there: Network Configuration Operators. You may try to add
yourselves to it as well.

I am working sort of backwards in here.

Answering your question:
"In XP you will have to set up network shares for ALL users or only for
your
selves as administrator"

It's been about 6 months since I touched that part of XP. It is entirely
from memory. It is a fairly irresponsible statement. If there is a way to
establish sharing for "everyone" and you do not mind in terms of security,
you may as well do it.

Otherwise, set shared permissions for select group of users or for the
administrator which in XP I think is the person who signs himself in.

And the last thing:
but I have
accounts which I don't use on the xp machines that are not on the vista
machine. that shouldn't make a difference, should it?

Probably not. I should say, not at all, although I may be wrong.

With the passwords you should make sure that all the accounts are aligned,
go over them another time, make sure user names are spelled the same, that
you have the full right to access the Network. What else? Nothing comes to
mind at this point.

It is doable.

Hi Chuck,

Unfortunately I'm having trouble understanding how to do the CDiag. Can I
contact you offline via phone or have you connect to my machine for
guidance? I've tried to run the browstat again on the Vista machine and get
the same response.

no
idea why it says disabled (see pic)

Wy,

OK, what you have to work on is the NetBT issue on Vista. IPConfig, and
both
Net Config, logs show that NetBT is not active.

Try CDiag, run on all 3 computers.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-cdiag-without-assistance.html>

And run "browstat status" on Vista, in a command window started AS ADMIN,
and
see what error you get.

Thanks for your help.

Wy

Wy,

OK, what you have to work on is the NetBT issue on Vista. IPConfig, and
both
Net Config, logs show that NetBT is not active.

Try CDiag, run on all 3 computers.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-cdiag-without-assistance.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-cdiag-without-assistance.html

And run "browstat status" on Vista, in a command window started AS ADMIN,
and
see what error you get.

unfortunately lusrmgr.msc doesn't work on vista home (i get an error message
saying it won't run on vista home premium). Not sure that would make a
difference--i am already an adminstrator. And i confirmed same
username/password combinations on all PCs.

Yep, I forgot to mention that fact. There should be perhaps a way to get
there via Control Panel. This is how it works in my machine: (ultimate)

Control Panel>>System and Maintenance>>Administrative Tools>>Computer
Management>>Local Users and Groups

You can try it.

Chuck - I don't know if it makes a difference or not but I have no problem
viewing the network using the Ethernet port on the Vista machine - it's the
Wireless that's the problem.

Wy

Hi Wy,

An interesting detail, there. I'm not sure how to use it though, as the
IPConfig and Net logs show no clue of an Ethernet connection on Vista, just WiFi
("Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter #2"). can you run those diagnostics again,
when the Ethernet connection is active?

Hi Chuck,

I didn't have the ethernet plugged in so that probably why it doesn't show.
I'll run the IPConfig and Net logs again tonight. Should I try to run the
browstat also?

Sorry for reposting. I did not realize when I posted it a couple of minutes
ago that I did it in html. Now is the plain text.

Control Panel ( Classic View) ==>Network & Sharing Center==>

Set Network Discovery ON.
Set File Sharing ON
Set Password Protected sharing ON

Place cursor on Network. Double click.
After a short while you should see all the computer on your network.

Keep double clicking on the computers.

If you need to do Printer sharing, make sure you enabled Printer sharing on
the previous pane but first you must see the printer's image in the last
window.

You will not be able to do any of these unless you first forced your XP to
reciprocate.

In XP you will have to set up network shares for ALL users or only for your
selves as administrator. It is also possible that you will need to elevate
yourselves in Vista to the level of an administrator. Remember, you are not
an administrator yet.

Open Command Prompt and run it "as administrator" Type lusrmgr.msc. It will
give you a GUI: Local Users and Groups. Click on Groups thumbnail. In the
Left pane find the group "Administrators" Add yourselves to this group.
Close the GUI.

Enjoy your networking.

Forget about ipconfig.

Forget about NetBios.

Forget about NetBT.

If you are related to Jane Wyman I should say that I enjoyed her in a movie
the other night: Let's do it over again. Do it over again with your LAN.

I have similar problem. Recently I purchased a new Laptop with Windows Vista
Home Permium operating system. I also have two desktop computers. One with XP
and the other one with Windows 98. They are connected to wireless system.
From XP and Windows 98 I could see the Vista computer and each others. I
could print a sharing printer between Windows 98 and XP computers. However I
cannot see XP and Windows 98 computers from Vista computer. I also cannot add
the remote printer. For your information I put Network Discovery, File
Sharing and Printer sharing ON. However, I cannot still see the two other
computers from Vista. The name of working group in three computers is
WORKGROUP. Can you please tell me how I can solve my problem.

Regards,

Azadeh

AlexB

I suggest you repost it to bring it up to the fore. It is already too far
down the line.

It looks from your description that it is a Vista problem.

Completely off the top of my head. Since you are using wireless connection
your Vista should have a wireless network card. Could you check if it is OK?

You go to Control panel>>System And Maintenance>>Device manager>>View
Hardware And Devices>>Network Adapters.

Check if there is an exclamation sign next to it. If there is--this card is
in trouble. You will have to uninstall it, reboot the machine and it will
try to reinstall it. Get ready to provide your installation disk if Vista
cannot find the drivers.

All of the above does not make any sense if you can access the Internet. If
you can access the Internet via this card then it means that the card is OK,
your router is fine and the problem lies elsewhere.

Why don't you come back with more information on your particular situation.

Could it be that your router can handle only a certain number of wireless
ports, let say 4. You already have 2 machines, XP and Win98, a printer,
perhaps something else you haven't disclosed and what you sees is the
router's way of saying: enough is enough.

Also if you cannot access the web from you Vista is it possible that the
distance between the router and Vista is too great for the signal to be
picked up?

Azadeh

I do not have problem with wireless Internet. I can connect to the Web and
the Internet connection from three computers is OK. My problem is that I
cannot see W98 and XP computer from Vista. Network Discovery, File sharing
and Printer sharing all are ON. However, I could see Vista from W98 and XP
computers but I cannot import Vista sharing printer to XP and W98. I do not
know if there is any restriction on the number of computer on wireless system
(the wireless system belongs to Bell Canada). I could find out from Bell. Is
there a way to find it out by us?

Azadeh

A

AlexB

Your BELL has nothing to do with the issue, I think, but your router does.
You should read thru instruction and see: they should mention the maximum
number of the wireless connections this router could accept.

Imagine if you wanted it to handle 150 wireless Internet cards in your home:
100 computer, 50 printers, etc.

What would this router do then? It will show you only the maximum limit it
can handle. It will act on first come first serve basis. Turn one of your
printers off and see what would happen.
