strange access behavior.

Hello. my network.

3 computers.
1 named NASbox, running a deadsimple samba server on a debian install.
this one is in the closet. connected to my router (Linksys wag200)
1 named XPS, running vista home premium, connected to the same router.
1 named REBBA, Xp home connected to same router.

all three have the correct workgroup/domain name setup (crib)

XPS has network discovery "on"
private network "yes"
Password protected sharing "off"
file sharing "on" (double checked the properties page of tcp/ip v4)

so, what exactly is my problem?

my XPS cant connect to the network.
i mean, obviously its connected. since it is broadcast to both samba
server, and REBBA can access my shares from her network window. but on
the XPS > Network, it only shows the router and the XPS computer,
however, if i try to open it, it should then show the folders. but it
says \\XPS is not acessible, you might not have the permission...."
but i checked the "users" folder that is being shared(according to the
xp and samba machine) but the "share" button is greyed out. and it
says "users; not shared, network path; Not shared" so already here
something smells funky. I have tried sharing new folders at C:/, it
says "couldnt share this folder". I tried sharing new folders from "C:/
users/" without luck, the share button greyed out. I have "guest"
account activated. i, i, i dont know what more i can do :S

i really dont know alot about networks. ive been trying all i think is
relevant(and making drawback changes if they didnt work) from
http://networking.nitecruzr.net/ awesome page. but after 3 days of
trouble shooting and failing im at my end here. i would really love
some interactive help.

all three computers are connected to the internet, without problem.

Dont know what more i can say to help you help me(if you can)

Would really appreciate if this can get fixed.

In order to connect to a *nix box from Vista:

A. Step one - on the *nix box (you may have already done this but I include
it to be thorough):

1. On Windows boxen, make sure all accounts are properly named (no spaces)
and there are no null passwords. Configure any firewalls to allow lan
traffic. Create shares as desired. Note that if any boxen are XP Pro, you
should disable Simple Sharing (Folder Options>View).

2. On Linux, create identical user account/passwords with your distro's
configuration method.
3. Make sure you've installed Samba server/client with your distro's
configuration method.
4. Configure run levels so that the nmb and smb daemons start at bootup.

5. Now add your users to Samba. Make these match the ones on Windows. I
think the easiest way is from the console, so open one, su to root, and
type:
smbpasswd -a username [enter]
(enter password)
(enter password again)

6. Go to your distro's configuration method and set your Samba server and
client Identity to match your Windows Workgroup name.

7. I use KDE, so if you use Gnome or another window manager you'll need to
figure this next bit out yourself. Open up the Control Center and go to
Internet/Network and then Samba. Click on the Administrator Mode (enter
root password). I use User security level. Check to make sure Shares (these
are for the Linux box of course) are the way you want them. Apply and close
that part.

8. Click on File Sharing and enable Administrator Mode. Check "Enable local
network file sharing". I have mine set on "Advanced sharing". Check the box
for "Use Samba" rather than NFS.

B. Step two - on the Vista box:

Vista Business/Ultimate only -
Start Orb>Search box>type: secpol.msc
When secpol.msc appears in Results above, right-click it and "run as
administrator".

Click on "Local Policies" --> "Security Options"

Navigate to the policy "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level"
and double-click it to get its Properties. By default Windows Vista sets
the policy to "NTVLM2 responses only". Use the drop-down arrow to change
this to "LM and NTLM ? use NTLMV2 session security if negotiated".

In Vista Home Premium, you won't have this tool so per MVP Steve Winograd,
do:

Start Orb>Search box>type: regedit
When regedit appears in the Results above, right-click it and "run as
administrator"

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

1. If it doesn't already exist, create a DWORD value named
LmCompatibilityLevel
2. Set the value to 1 and reboot.

Thank you very much. this lsa setting was at 3, but however. this did not
fix the problem, smbtree -N still shows the XPS box with its shared folders,
XP same, can access and edit files at will in the shared folders.
But i still cant see the network from the XPS :S

Did you check the firewall setting? On Ports and Protocol tab make sure you
checked File and Printer Sharing - for local network (subnet).
