Which Windows XP components should be installed?

I am using Windows XP SP2, which came pre-installed on my computer. I
accidentally uninstalled all of the Windows Components that are accessible by
the “Add/Remove Windows Components†button on the “Add/Remove Programsâ€
screen. Since I did not have a list of the components that were installed
initially, and was not sure of the purpose of some of them, I just choose a
rather complete set from the list and installed them.

Since doing this, my Norton Internet Security periodically produces a
pop-up several times in a row that states “Rules automatically created for
Windows Generic Host Process for WIN32 Servicesâ€. I assume that I installed a
component that was not installed before that is trying to communicate over a
port. My computer is connected to a DSL Modem through an internal Eithernet
card and also connected to a dial-up Internet service through an internal
dial-up modem. I am not connected to any other networks.

Among the Windows Components that I installed, but am not sure if I need,
are: Indexing Services, Simple Network Management Protocol, WNI SNMP
Provider, and all five components under “Networking Services†(Internet
Gateway Device Discovering and Control Client, Peer-to-Peer, RIP Listener,
Simple TCP/IP Services, and UpnP User Interface).

Can anyone identify which of these Windows Components are not needed for
a DSL connection via Eithernet and a dial-up connection via a Modem and may
be causing the Norton Internet Security pop-up?

Thanks in advance for any help that you can give me.

David,

If you're trying to get Windows Networking (ie file sharing etc) working, look
at my articles:

Chuck,

I am not connected to a home network or other network, unless Verizon
DSL and a dial-up Internet Service Provider connection count as networks. I
don't want any network services (file sharing, etc.) except those required
for the DSL Modem connection (via Ethernet card) and the dial-up modem
connection. I am using Windows XP Home SP2.

The problem is that I am being annoyed by a pop-up from my Norton
Internet Security. At various times during an on-line session, the pop-up
appears several times in rapid succession. Apparently Microsoft Generic Host
Process for Win32 Services is trying to communicate with something.

What I want to do is to uninstall whichever Windows component(s) are
giving rise to the Microsoft Generic Host Process for Win32 Services pop-up,
unless I need that component for the DSL connection or the dial-up connection
to the internet.

As you can tell, I know next to nothing about networking, but would
appreciate any help. Should I be posting on some other Windows XP Newsgroup?
