Hello, sorry for having to post this off topic post here but i'm having
trouble tracking down (genuine) free tech support newsgroups/forums. I
registered with a couple only to realise they were not really free as
advertised and also registered with "geeks to go" but cant find the
"make post" button anywhere!. I remember seeing a list something like:
"the best 5 free tech support sites" somewhere on a freeware site once
but also cant find this reference on google anymore.........any
suggestions would be much appreciated so i dont have to post off topic
posts in the wrong groups anymore........sites with chat cappabillity
would be great if possible......the listings i once saw where on a site
called (i think) cool tools......or something like this.

many thanks if someone can advise.....A

If you ( a consultant ) really, really expect us non-consultant types to
know the answer to this mythical question, then maybe we should all become
consultants !

You need tech support for .... WHAT exactly ??

Shouldn't be too hard finding a newsgroup, no? Which one, that
depends an awful lot on the nature of your problem. If you give more
details, we can always suggest a proper newsgroup if you want.

Have you tried the following NewsGroup?
24hoursupport.helpdesk

Their are thousands of News Groups which discuss just about anything
under the sun and then some, so without knowing what kind of help you
are seeking it's very difficult to point you in the right direction.

I always just look for a newsgroup or forum for the particular program
if it's a program that I'm having trouble with. Otherwise, the main
thing going is
And frankly, it hasn't impressed me much in the past.

Castlecops is a pretty good one for security issues:

Requires free registration though.

Here's another one that looks good, but I haven't used it:

Well, have a look at the comp.* newsgroups. There's a newsgroup for
virtually anything computer-related, so take your pick depending on the
questions you have.

You could always set up your own web-site and employ someone to
answer your technical support questions! The web-site could be
done more or less freely (this is alt.comp.freeware, is it not?)
but the web-monkey operating it will need feeding.

One reason good technical support is hard to find is the
proliferation of web-sites claiming to do technical support!
Most of them are just selling users to their advertisers. I've
had loads of my tech questions uploaded from USENET to those
types of forums where the questions, presumably, remain
unanswered to this day (unanswered in those forums but not on
USENET).

Lastly, here's my serious answer to your question. Frame your
query and put it to Google. Use Google web first but then use
groups if the web search fails. Try to use what is most
distinctive in your problem. Eg. if you get an error code use
that actual number in conjunction with the name of the software.

If your question relates to a particular product try to find a
forum, supported by the manufacturer, for that product (via
Google).

"Consulting: If you're not a part of the solution, there's good money to
be made in prolonging the problem."
