When Win XP logo apperars what is loading?

Hi

I"m desperate for some Win XP help. My pc will not boot up normally (period)
freezes at win logo screen every time. What is Windows loading at this
screen? Boots in safe mode only. I have just finished a clean install on a
MOB and CPU which was working fine in another system. This was happening too
before I reformated teh hard drive and Win XP Home was installed. If some
one could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreicated it.
Could a driver, hardware componet or motherboard be bad? Never makes it past
the logo screen durning normal boot up.

Thanks

Hi Charles
If your PC hangs on normal startup but will start in Safe Mode then you are
looking at a driver or process conflict of some kind. Try this go back into
Safe Mode. Go to the Start menu and click on run. Type into the box msconfig
and a utility will pop-up. Click the diagnostic radio button and click ok.
Exit Safe Mode and allow XP to try and start normally. My guess is that it
will. This won't fix things but we will be a little further forward. Tell us
if you can open Windows this way.

Assuming you can run this in safe mode

msconfig.exe

go to the BOOT.INI tab and select /SOS

this will turf the boot screen and show you the drivers as they are being
loaded. Chances are that you have a video driver problem.

Hello,

Thank you for the reply. I selected SOS startup mode as you mentioned and
the list of drivers loading went by so fast I could not determine anything>
Then a blue screen came up stating the Windows XP build 5.1 2600 and it read
1 processor with 512 of RAM that was it. I'm not sure what this means. But it
did not boot past this screen.

That's a pity. XP in diagnostic mode is pretty like XP in Safe Mode with
only essential services running. Hopefully someone might be able to make
another suggestion. In summary you have done a clean install ie not over an
existing version of Windows XP, and your motherboard was working properly
with XP in the past. You can get into Safe Mode but diagnostic mode doesn't
work. What happens when you press F8 at startup and instead of selecting
Safe mode you select VGA mode?

Hi Chelsea,

Thanks again for the reply, I tried booting in VGA mode and Windows froze at
the LOGO screen again. It didn't work. Thanks for trying to help me narrow
down the problem. I should have left well enough alone. I did try this. Using
a linux OS BOOT CD Knoppix 3.9 which boots a complete os from the CD. I did
this to see if I could replicate the same issue there, the Linus Knoppix
BOOTed into linux with no problem. All devices where recongized by Linux
including lan, network, graphics card and sound car. I use as a rescue disk
when all elese fail this allows me to get to the data. Wish Windows had
something like this to troubleshoot. I been building systems for a long time
and never had this problem, I'm at a loss, I wondering if I should swap out
the newer MOBO and CPU and put the old one back in a see what happens. What
do you think? Anything else you can thisnk of please let me know. I
appreciate your help.

Hi Charles,
I have been thinking about the differences between Safe mode and normal mode
with diagnostics enabled. What I suggest you do is go back into Safe mode
and visit the Device manager. Make a list of all the devices on your system
and disable them by right clicking the device-selecting properties on the
General Tab go to the bottom and the device usage combo-box. Disable
everything you can for your profile this will include DVD/CDrom drives,
floppy controller, floppy disk drive, Secondary IDE controller, Network
Adaptor, Serial and parallel ports any sound or cam/scanner device. Most USB
keyboards come with a ps/2 adaptor plug which allows the ps/2 plug to be
converted to plug into a USB port and the same is true of the mouse-if you
have these adaptors Plug your mouse and keyboard into the PS/2 sockets
rather than the USB ports-disable as many of the USB devices as you can
under Universal serial bus controllers. Note that not all devices allow
themselves to be disabled. Make careful note of everything you disable.
Right now leave Safe Mode and attempt to start in normal mode and lets see
what happens now!

e a service that has gone wrong, or a low-level driver.
You could try to do a repair install, or try with the recovery console to
disable drivers and services - but that's no fun job.
From safe mode, you could also try to unnstall/disable 3rd party software
that starts up automatically (AV software, firewalls). Another thing is to
use msconfig and check the services thoroughly. Last but not least: event
log, check if there are errors, they might be helpful.

Hi Chelsea,

Okay I started thinking about drivers as per your reply. Before booting back
up in safe mode I deceided to remove the Yamaha Maxi Sound Fortissimo sound
card that I have been using in this system. Would you believe that Windows
started right up, with no problems. Now I have been isuing this card with Win
XP for years but when I originally installed XP home on this system I opted
for the upgrade install not a clean. I reinserted the card Windows installed
its included driver for the card, rebooted and Windows stalled at the logo
again. I took the sound card back out and Windows started. I'm not usuing
this card anymore for some reason XP did not like it. I enabled the onboad
sound card. Thank you for the help. As you mentioned drivers seemed to be
causing the problem. This was a first for me. TheYamaha card I was using goes
back to the Win 98 and ME days.

Thank You......

That's great Charles,
From experience I now never upgrade the OS over the previous version-it is
never as good as a clean install, similarly Windows repair installations in
my experience don't repair really sick systems-it's all to do with
remembering the existing system settings. Anyhow really glad your up and
running again.
