What is "Webfldrs XP" doing in my CCleaner add/remove programs

What is "WebFldrs XP" doing in our CCleaner Add/Remove Programs list?

Is "WebFldrs XP" a legitimate software or is it a bad thing?

Not much is in the google record as far as I can tell.
Some say it's integral to the workings of XP; others say it's spyware.

Can you help me make sense of this conflicting information about the
"WebFldrs XP" entry on my CCleaner Add or Remove Programs wizard?

I should note this "WebFldrs XP" entry does NOT show up in the normal
Windows XP Add/Remove Programs application. But it definately shows up
in the well respected CCleaner freeware
(http://www.ccleaner.com/download) program.

Should we remove this "WebFldrs XP" application using CCleaner?
What will happen if we do?

Leave it alone. It is legitimate.

I just found a use for it, 10 minutes ago while playing with Chandler
(maybe an MS Outlook killer).

http://chandler.osafoundation.org/

It's part of setting up a shared WebDAV folder on an XP machine.

http://courses.unt.edu/webct/vista/faculty/webdav_winxp_vista.pdf

I just ran the steps on the first page of that URL and my XP machine
seems fine. I've created a shared WebDAV folder on the osafoundation
experimental WebDAV server.

I see conflicting information in the google record.

For example, this agrees with you that WebFldrs XP is legit:
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...lnk=st&q=webfldrs+xp&rnum=12#77e1fa023c3ad59f
http://discussions.virtualdr.com/archive/index.php/t-166773.html
http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/104117.html

Yet, this says it's a virus:
http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=205047&messageID=2192314
http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?t=189089
http://www.hardwaregeeks.com/board/showthread.php?t=18739

To make matters worse, there are apparently TWO different "web
folders" applications (one in FrontPage which is apparently not
related). This is NOT the WebFldrs XP we're talking about here:
http://net-sites.com/sitebuilder/frontpage/fp2000/tips/webfolders.asp

If WebFldrs XP is truly legitimate, does anyone know what it does?

See my other post, just a few minutes ago. As for your Frontpage
file, FWIW I don't have FP on my machine.

Web Folders is Windows file folders on a WebDAV server. These can be
shared by multiple users but I've not gotten that far, yet.

The instructions in the URL I posted seem to work fine and if you go
to osafoundation.org you can try their "cosmo" WebDAV server for
free. Read the fine print. It's a test environment and your files may
be lost when they upgrade the server, which seems to be every few
months.

It's not unreasonable for Frontpage to use webdav and it's not unlike
Microsoft to have two versions of the same thing in circulation.

| WebFldrs XP ... does anyone know what it does?
My statement hasn't changed.

I'm OK with it being legitimate.
I deleted it already.
I'm just trying to figure out what it does.

Does EVERYONE have WebFlders XP on their system by default?
(note: You won't see it in the normal add/remove programs)
Does anyone know what WebFldrs XP does?

Ooops. I just saw the kind post by Al Dykes.
Thanks Al for testing WebFlders XP out & for explaining what it is.

I am guessing that EVERYONE with XP has WebFldrs XP installed and
running (they just don't know it).

Am I correct?

I have to wonder, out loud as it were, why Microsoft sees fit to HIDE
this "WebFldrs XP" program from our eyes?

Is this "normal" that Microsoft would hide a running program like
this?

Why hide it?

I deleted it (using CCleaner's add/remove programs application) so
I'll see if there are any deleterious effects ... but if EVERYONE is
running this (and they don't even know it) ... I wonder out loud why
Microsoft sees fit to hide that fact from their prying eyes?????

Why would Microsoft do that?

Microsoft "hides" programs to try to keep "fiddling" users from deleting
files and folders it deems necessary.

WebFldrs allows uploading of files.

There is a whole long list of programs that MS doesn't list in add
remove. Some are listed in XP services, while others don't seem to be
listed at all. The latter ones are generally launched from the command
line when needed. Some of this stuff gets launched by other programs
via a system call to XP so the user in not very involved (or informed)
regarding the function of the program anyway.

Look for an entry in add remove or a short cut to Telnet. There isn't
one. Same for Netmeeting and many more. These programs are embedded
into Windows so if you don't know about them you will never find them.
