what is a "PME"?

Recently, I got excellent help when my XP would boot at
modem (phen line)ring. Thank you for all who replied. The
cause seemed to be in the Bios. However, no "wake up on
ring"or anything similar was enabled, only "wake up on
PME". When I disabled "wake up on PME" the unneccessary
boot on phone line ring stopped.
My question is - since "wake up on PME" seems to default
to "enabled" in XP, what is the PME for? What is it?

Thank you!
