What did I do wrong?

Bible John

Recently my Compaq Armada 1700's laptop's hard drive crashed. The drive is
nearly dead and I was receiving smart drive failed errors upon boot. I was
able to backup most of the content on the drive to my Windows XP PC, and the
rest will need to be re-installed from my CD's. The Compaq is running
Windows 98SE. So I used the Windows XP backup app and was able to restore
what I could to the used 10GB hard drive that I bought today at a used
computer warehouse. However after the restore the laptop could not boot
Windows98. I then had to reinstall 98 on th laptop, and have been spending a
couple of hours trying to clear out all the bugs, because I keep on getting
crashes as soon as Windows boots. msconfig.exe has been a great help in
trying to solve these problems.

Did I do something and if I did, what? I thought I could trust the Windows
XP backup application. Or should I have purchased Retrospect for Windows? I
have been using this on my Macs since 1999, first on OS 8.1, and know on
OSX.

Here is one log from the XP Backup.

Thanks for the help guys.

File formats under Windows XP are not compatible with Windows 98SE,
especially in the area of the registry.
So if you did a complete backup (including System State) and did a complete
restore, you overwrote the registry with a possible different formatted
registry database.

Windows XP is generally UNICODE, with Windows 98SE ANSI.
