problem setting short filename

i'm trying to restore some files from an ntbackup archive and i'm getting
8.3 filename errors. i've run chkdsk on the target filesystem but the errors
remain. no big deal but i'd like to know why. here's the error log from
ntbackup restore. thanks.

They are Warnings not errors. And I suspect the shortname already exists (there is nothing that keeps short names the same in windows - windows will change it whenever it needs to).

thanks for the reply. i tried to discover if the 8.3 name actually exists by
running diskeditor. it crashed with a register dump. i ran dir under 98 (i'm
multi-booting with xp and others and have experienced the problem with xp)
and it shows a short filename. i don't know if this means it actually exists
on the filesystem or if dir generates it. for what it's worth here's the
exerpt from dir under 98 for the file "C:\foobar\Documents and
Settings\gary\Cookies\gary@zap2it[3].txt"
