What Causes a "System Checkpoint" to be created?

The reason I ask is that to make sure I'm setting fairly current restore
points I occasionally run Spybot just for that reason. However in looking at
my restore points available, I see one almost daily called "System
Checkpoint". This in spite of the fact that I've done nothing unusual that I
can remember to cause it such as install a new driver, etc.

I'd like to know if this is automatic preventive maintenance of some kind or
if some lesser things I'm doing is causing the creation of them.

Thanks

The System Restore subsystem makes a check point daily - looking for a
quiet chance 24 hours after the last one. It is there as a means of
going back to the system state (including the registry) of up to a few
days (say a couple of weeks) ago, should the settings get damaged - eg
installing and uninstalling a test software package; or little Johnny
wreaking havoc. As such it is very useful, but do not regard it as a
substitute for backup
