System Restore not creating Automatic System Check Points

E

eli

Hello:

System Restore is working fine on this Windows XP Pro. Except that it
rarely creates any Automatic System Check Points.

I've tested its functionality several times, and all indications are that it
works---except for the above-mentioned problem. I can create such points
manually, but XP isnt creating them automatically as it should. Except prior
to a Windows Update install eg.

I've gone through most of the trouble shooting steps in Bert Kinney's page
for this:

http://bertk.mvps.org/html/srauto.html

Haven't found the cause yet....

I'm hoping not to do a Repair/Install for this.

Could it be some program runnig persistently in the background which is
interfering with automatic checkpint creation? If so, how might I ascertain
which it is?

I use Zone Alarm Security Suite 6.1.737.000

Any help would be appreciated:

-Eli

Hi Eli,

The Automatic System Restore point depends upon Task Scheduler service,
though Scheduled Tasks will not show System Restore as a job. System Restore
Checkpoints may not be created if Task Scheduler service is Stopped.

System Restore requires the machine to be in an idle state to create system
check points. This is by design so that System Restore never intrudes when
the user is using the machine by taking processing power to create a system
checkpoint. Hence, if system restore never sees any idle time on the
machine, it will not be able to create System Checkpoints. Here is a script
that'll automatically create a restore point during the _first_ bootup of
the day. You can place this script in the Startup group.

How to automatically create a System Restore point upon the first boot up of
the day?:

Hi Eli - sorry to piggy back on your question

Hi Ramesh - hoping you may be able to help me too. I seem to have the same
problem as Eli in that my system has stopped automatically creating restore
points. I'm not aware of any other problems and have loads of space left on
my drive. I have read the notes you've sent but I'm not very technical at all
- any chance you'd be able to point me in the right direction in more simple
terms (I'm not even sure what a notepad document is!!) or, bearing in mind my
basic knowledge, will trying to follow your script cause more problems!!

Hope you managed to sort yours out Eli

Geoff,

Click Start, Run and type Notepad.
Copy the code given here [http://windowsxp.mvps.org/createrp.htm] to Notepad
Save the file as "createrp.vbs"
Place the file to your Startup folder. The Startup folder is present under
these locations:

C:\Documents and Settings\{Username}\Start Menu\Programs (per-user)
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs (all users)

The script will run at every startup, but will only create a restore point
if there are no restore points already created for the current day.

Thanks v much Ramesh, that has worked & a Daily restore point has been
created - very grateful.

I don't suppose you would have any ideas why the system RP's suddenly
stopped though? Is it anything I should worry about??

Thanks again

Glad that helped, Geoff. The following page has the troubleshooting
checklist that can help you determine the problem.

Hi Geoff,

Let's take a look at Event Viewer for any System Restore logs that may
have been created recently that may help us diagnosing the problem.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.
Click on System in the left pane.
Click the gray title "Source" at the top of the source name column in
the right pane to sort by source name, look for "sr" and "srservice".
Double click on each of these events, then click on the button below the
two arrows in the upper right corner. This will copy the event
information to the clipboard. Paste the information for each of the two
event here. There's no need to post duplicate Event ID's.

How do I use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore logs?
