Weird symbols in Outlook signature

I'm using Windows 2000 and Outlook 2002. I recently changed my signature, and
ever since then any time I create a new message, some weird symbols () are
inserted above my signature. I've tried deleting and recreating the signature
as well as my email account, but so far nothing has helped. Any ideas as to
how I can get rid of those symbols?

What is your default message encoding? If you change to Western ISO, does
it help?

the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

It's already in Western ISO. I changed it to Western Windows and back, but I
still get the symbols both ways.
