Weird appearing icons

Reloaded XP after a hard drive failure, and now the menu icons appear as a
little mouse instead of an arrow, the check boxes appear weird (i'm not sure
what they are supposed to be) and there are other quirky symbols in the menus
that look like zigzags. How can I get this appearance back to normal?

Maybe you should switch between desktop themes, that might work.
