strange appearing icons

Reloaded XP after a hard drive failure, and now the menu icons (which tell
you that there is a submenu) appear as a little mouse instead of an arrow,
the check boxes appear weird (i'm not sure what they are supposed to be) and
there are other quirky symbols in the menus that look like zigzags. How can
I get this appearance back to normal?

Right-click the desktop, Properties, "Themes" tab, use the spin box to select "Windows XP",
Apply, OK, press F5 to refresh the desktop.
