Websites With Java Menus

<sigh>

We've been here before.

Your page has an improperly placed body tag, because this is not working -

</head>

<!--webbot bot="Include" U-Include="IncludeItems/top.htm" TAG="BODY"
startspan -->
<div align="center">

But if it were working, then this body tag further down the page would cause
more problems for you -

</div>

<!--webbot bot="Include" i-checksum="63563" endspan --><body topmargin="0"
leftmargin="0" link="#FAD734" vlink="#FAD734" alink="#00FF00" onLoad="
focus();" text="#FFFFFF" style="text-align: left"><div align=

You cannot expect us to be able to fix anything on your page as long as the
page is invalid HTML, really.

In addition, this menu system -

<script src="IncludeItems/TejanosMenu/xaramenu.js"

may be another source of problems (I don't know - I never use such
all-javascript menus). Perhaps the javascript code in the menu is a
cross-browser problem....

I use CSS to create/display the main buttons, and use CSS/DHTML to
display subpages.

The use of a dynamic web template (which I do use) is optional.

Good luck.

1. Not a good idea to nest FP Includes.

2. All inks to JavaScript files should be absolute URLs, ex:

<script menumaker src="TejanosMenu/tejanosmenu.js">
change to
<script menumaker src="http://www.dfwtejanos.com/IncludeItems/TejanosMenu/tejanosmenu.js">

3. Remove ALL spaces (%20) from folder and file names.

4. Since your site is hosted on a Unix/Linux server, you should stick with all lower case folder and
file names to avoid user getting a 404. ex:

This link works:
http://www.dfwtejanos.com/Academys/AcademyMidCities/Mid Cities.htm
This link doesn't work:
http://www.dfwtejanos.com/Academys/AcademymidCities/Mid Cities.htm

I was reading that the menus won't propagate to all pages with Includes and
Shared Boarders therefore, Dynamic ... is what it takes to get around that.

Do you just use the FrontPage stuff to create everything or is there a more
user friendly utility that can do it. As it stands now, Frontpage is not
that friendly (at least not to me) when it comes to creating menus.

Thanks

W

I dont use shared borders, I use a .DWT page with the menu on it. It gets
inserted into any page it is attached to.

Yes I know we've been here before.
Browser compatibility shows no errors except that it does not like the Jimco
Spawn that is placed after the </head>. But this really doesn't seem to be
an issue.

You say /head is not working but I don't know what you mean by that. I've
done lots of cleaning since our last discussion. I will try to work thru
the rest of your comments but I don't think these have anything to do with
why some folks can't see the JavaScript Menus.

Most menus systems I see can't work on all the pages. How do you get a menu
system to be identical on all pages unless it is somehow propagated through
out the website? I'm still learning, so it made sense to me to have a top
section that is Included which is common to all pages. Taking that one step
further, it seems like the best place to put the JavaScripts so that the
Menus are on every page and identical on every page.

Sorry for your headache (that I've caused) but I will eventually work
through this. Your help is appreciated.... believe me. I'm just to green
to take advantages of all your help.

A well formed HTML page has this order of things -

<html>
<head>
"non-printing" markup goes here, like javascript function definitions, CSS
style rule declarations, meta tags, title tag, etc.
</head>
nothing belongs here
<body>
all your 'printing' markup goes here, i.e., the markup specifying everything
you see on the screen.
</body>
</html>

Your page does not have that order - it is -

<html>
<head>
</head>
HTML markup
<body>
more HTML markup
</body>
</html>

The problem is that the first bit of HTML markup below the </head> tag looks
like it should have a <body> tag supplied by some weird include line, but
that include is not working. So - as it is now, your page has a single
<body> tag that is misplaced. As a result it's invalid code. If the
include were working, your page would have two <body> tags. It would still
be invalid code. You are only allowed to have a single instance of <body>
and </body> on a given page.

Given that the page is invalid code, it's hard to diagnose any other
anomalies it might exhibit. See what I mean?

R

Ronx

That include is a FrontPage include which, if it worked, would not
provide a <body> tag. It must come after the page's <body> tag.

Pretty much the same thing I do.

I use the DWT for all the non CSS type info, graphics, tags, etc., and the
CSS for layout and formatting.

That way I can easily make site wide changes very easily.

Yes I understand the MS Issues with Java but these are JavaScripts that
creates the menus. It seems that all browsers should be able to interpret
them with out an installation of Java?

We were going off what you wrote ... .see quote below.

I use DWT with CSS and includes for menus as I like to show whatever pages
are in each section while not showing the whole deeper menu on EACH page ...
using includes allows more latitude and makes it easy to go to the relvevant
section to update a menu. I usually just make text menu's but I've just
started using css for rollover type 'buttons'. Very neat and eye candy.

It's never been so easy.

I removed the nested includes. What I wasn't sure is if the include should
come after the <body> tag or if it could before it (yet after the </html>)?
