Try the following and see if it helps.

Try these steps:
Open IE, tools, internet options.
Select Advanced tab and click the [restore defaults] button.
Later, select the Programs and click the [reset web settinngs] button.
Click OK.

As Jan recommended; and specifically, be sure the "re-use windows for
launching shortcuts" checkbox gets un-checked in the IE options>Advanced
tab>apply>OK out. Also, a link on a given open web page will open in the
same window. To avoid that, R-click, and open in a new window, if that's
what you'd prefer.

Remove Yahoo Companion if installed.
