Wacky startup and shutdown popups

Erie Jim

When I shutdown my XP Home Edition I get a window from
Rundll32.exe that shows a moving bar as it shutsdown. I
hit "End Now" and a new window popsup from "Wupdater.exe"
with the same bar running. I hit "End Now" and my machine
shuts down OK.

The other problem Im having is Windows Media Player pops
up when I start the machine. Nothing plays. I just X it
out and keep on computing. I found this entry in Registry -
C:\PROGRA~1\WINDOWS~3\wmplayer.exe
This doesn't look right because of the ~ (ampersands). Is
this a virus/trojan that caused this? I've run Mcaffee and
Norton and found nothing.

email me please.

Hi

For 'wupdater' try these programs to check for any spyware that may be on
your system:

Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/
CWShredder - http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

Also see the following link:

http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

For wmplayer - have a look in msconfig>startup for a reference to it. If
found uncheck it and then reboot your system.
