Both my laptop and desktop computers have recently developed an aversion to
shutting down properly. I usually get a window display with a message that
reads "this program is not responding." The title bar on the window reads
"END PROGRAM _ MCI Command Hand..." and the window will not expand to give
me more info. I have searched the Knowledge Base but can't find any clue to
help me. I even tried to use the System Restore feature to restore to the
oldest restore point available but nothing changed. The problem does not
occur every time I shut down. For instance, if I reboot every 30 minutes or
so the problem may not occur.
According to Task Manager there is no process named MCI running in the
background but there are references in the registry to programs with that
name, some in the system files, so I assume that this is a system process
that runs at shutdown. I thought that if it is a system problem and I
reinstalled SP2 that may fix the problem but apparently XP is not going to
let me reinstall SP2 since it has been installed previously.
Any suggestions?
