W31 cardfile/desktop only?

Old cardfile fr W 3.1 still works. Copied to floppy from old system and then to desktop of my new system, XP. Will only work from desktop and then, only if sepate file icons are displayed on desktop with cardfile.exe file i.e. relatives, businesses, doctors etc.. They are taking all of my desktop. Tried copying, dragging, moving the above to new folder on desktop. It cleared the desktop, but the program would run but with no .crd files in the card file select box to choose from.
Added icons to *start* column, also to *documents*, with same results. Anyway out of this perhaps with a second desktop for other *users* or *guest* log-ins??? Thanks, Ron ([email protected])

Ron, I still use Cardfile. I copied cardfile.exe and my *.crd files to
their own folder. I used D:\Cardfile so that the name would be 8 characters
or less. By using the shorter path and keeping the *.crd files with the
executable, you should be able to switch from one *.crd file to another
using File> Open too.

Next I added a "file type" in Folder Options> File Types for *.CRD and used
those screens to also assign an icon to the *.crd files. You can establish
this using Open With as well but you still might want to go to Folder
Options> File Types to assign an icon.

From there, I created shortcuts to my two (but indispensable) *.crd files
and placed them into the Quick Launch toolbar. It sounds like you have more
*.crd files than I do. You might want to create a single folder on the
desktop and drop all of your cardfile shortcuts into it.

Or use the toolbar approach. Create a folder somewhere on the drive and
drop all of the cardfile shortcuts into it. Then right click on the taskbar
and select Toolbars> New Toolbar. Select the folder holding the shortcuts.

When the toolbar appears on the taskbar, right click within its boundaries
and adjust its setting to your liking. Remember also that toolbars can live
on the taskbar or the desktop - along any monitor edge or in the middle.
They can be set to "autohide" when they reside on the desktop.

If you don't like the toolbar presentation, just uncheck it from the
taskbar's list of toolbars to remove it. Or, if it's on the desktop, right
click and select Exit.
