Volume Knocked Out by Windows Updates

Any particular reason why volume on some PCs (and laptops) would be knocked
out by Windows updates? We have a weekly mandatory WSUS update on Tuesday
overnight. On Wednesday AM, some of our workstations contantly lose their
volume. This happens ONLY on Wednesday AM (i.e. I get emails from employees
saying, 'my volume does not work').
Most of the controls are grayed out in Sounds and Audio Devices in Control
Panel.

Do you "by chance" also select to update device drivers with WSUS? I
have seen the standard Windows Update include drivers that are very
out-of-date or completely wrong.
