Vista: Taskbar hides most buttons

I know this is a Vista question but I don't see any microsoft.public.
vista related newsgroups so I have to post here.

Can someone tell me why the taskbar on Windows shows pratically
nothing? Mine must be 1000 pixels across but right now all I see is a
single button representing the IE windows I have open on my system.
Not only is that the only taskbar button, but it's probably about half
the width I'd expect it to be. I have Spider Solitaire, Notepad,
Windows Mail, and 3 instances of Firefox running on my system as well
but the only way I can see their taskbar buttons is to click the
little up/down arrows on the right side of the taskbar (apparently a
new Vista feature) to view different levels of buttons. Each level
maxes out with 2 buttons!

I have SP-1 and am running Vista in "classic" mode so that it looks
like Windows 2000 and saves some system resources.
