I know.. not much of a contribution to the discussion but I really dont care
which OS other people use. I just wanted to feel like I was participating in
the discussion process. Yay me!

Most people would be embarrased to admit they have
antiquated hardware that they are still using.

Yet another Microsoft Boy who thinks that denigrating the messenger in a
supercilious manner and ignoring the message is the way to debate the
issues.

Actually, this weekend I am updating this old computer to an AMD AM2
ATHLON 64 4600+ D-CORE with a new ASUS motherboard and 2 GB DDR2 800
CORSAIR CL5XMS2 RAM. I can hardly wait to see Ubuntu fly on that baby.

I'm giving the old ASUS away to someone who can't afford computers and
who you would obviously hold in disdain.

Actually I try to help people who have older hardware upgrade to newer
technology. Thats part of my job.

And again you are the one calling me a name. You go around complaining
about people calling you names and adding nothing to the discussion then you
go and do it yourself... Thats called a hypocrit...

Go ahead and call me a microsoft boy. I happen to like a lot of their
software (not all of what they have but a lot of it). I have tried Ubunto
Linux 7.04 and don't understand why you think it's so much better than
vista, buy hey, to each their own...

Now that you will have updated hardware maybe you could actually run Vista
and add something to the discussion instead of talk about stuff you know
nothing about.

Hum...according to you linux already flys on your machine. What's going to
do now? Spontaneously combust?

You've already told us that you will (now) NEVER run Vista so why upgrade?
According to you, your current linux solution gives you everything you need.
I smell another steaming lie coming our way! I sense the most recent
version of Ubudubu doesn't run very well on his POS hardware.

I guess you think it's normal to call someone a "freak" and a "drama

you don't even realize you're doing it.

HAHAHAHA!!!! So you "took offense" to my GENERAL question about linux
freaks? Admitting your guilt isn't helping you.

You also need to learn to read. Drama queen "MATERIAL" is not a person. I
also called an action "SAD", not a person.

Here's an insult for you. alias, you are so utterly and completely ignorant
that speaking English to you is a pointless waste of time. You
misunderstand 99% of the text you read. It's no wonder you're as
misinformed as you are.

I have antiquated hardware that runs XP great, but would never even try to
install Vista on it.

Reported by who? That's not true. Vista which includes the x86 flavor
can not properly read 4GB so off the bat that comment is far fetched.

Vista business seems to run fine for me on 2gb ram, except for the
pauses every 10sec w/ the mouse.

Depends on what you're using it for doesn't it? Why would you throw away
hardware that does what you need it to do?

My mother has a 6 year old laptop. I purchased it for my use originally, and
gave it to her 2 years ago. Running XP Home, it does what she wants. What's
wrong with that? I'm proud to admit that I don't throw out hardware while it
still does what I need.

I've *just* got a new TV. The previous one was 15 years old. It performed
well up until the day it was replaced, but I really wanted to upgrade to a
flat screen TFT type job. Assuming it lasts, I wouldn't be very surprised if
I keep the new TV as long. What's wrong with that? I'm proud to admit that I
don't throw out hardware while it still does what I need.

The 10 year old music centre in my living room (a brit version of the 'den'
for you americans) recently died. I replaced it with the 5 year old one that
I used to use upstairs, which has been replaced with something more
up-to-date, an iPod plugged into JBL's fine OnTime speakers. What's wrong
with that? I'm proud to admit that I don't throw out hardware while it
still does what I need.

We withdrew a terminal from service this week at work that has been running
our phone switchboard for about 8 years, on NT 4.0, with nary a problem. It
had one day off 3 years ago when the power supply shorted out and it took me
a day to find a spare the right size in our stores. What's wrong with that?
I'm proud to admit that my employer does not throw out hardware while it
still does what we need.

In addition to the above, we still have several machines based on the
PII-350, that we've upgraded in terms of disk and memory and run a cut down
version of XP on for process control (security door management, stuff like
that). What's wrong with that? I'm proud to admit that my employer does not
throw out hardware while it still does what we need.

I'm proud to say I don't waste resources for the hell of it. I actually
would have thought that most people would be embarrassed to admit they are
snobs about the age of hardware instead of thinking about whether or not it
still does the job.

In-line
Depends on what you're using it for doesn't it? Why would you throw away
hardware that does what you need it to do?

Depends on whether the new system would provide a better and faster
solution. If a newer solution were able to provide better productivity and
I decided not to upgrade but my competition did they would be in a better
position to increase market share than I am.

For home use? Kids (and even some adults) like to play the latest games.
If you think those older computers are going to handle the newer games that
are going be be coming out (especially the ones written to use directx 10)
you are not going to be very happy. Students are going to need to learn
more up to date software. Even programmers are required to update their
skills as newer technology and code comes out.

I have a phone system that runs on and old 486 computer. Am I going to
upgrade it? Not until I upgrade the whole phone system. But then talking
about that and upgrading a persons workstation is two different things.

What's wrong with that? I'm proud to admit that I don't throw out hardware

Would XP do what I need? Yes, but not as fast or as well as I can do it now
in Vista.

The life cycle of a TV and a computer are different. I don't remember
adding software applications or an antivirus scanner to my TV. Let compare
apples to apples...

Again, comparing apples to apples I was talking about people's workstations

load XP on it and give it to your kids and see how long they want to use
it....

Why upgrade?

Why should I keep using several older pieces of equipment when I can upgrade
and run those systems now in a window using VMWARE? I can save space, fewer
resources to maintain and save electricity. I guess I could keep those old
boxes, you never know when you might need a door stop...

Interesting, as an O/S itself typically does nothing that can make you
money. It's application's that you use on an O/S that make the money.

What specifically works faster than in XP ? As for the as well part, I
don't see how a different O/S can make you a better programmer, web page
designer, graphic artist, video editor, etc.

I'm guessing you have a new dual-core PC that came with Vista, which of
course *SHOULD* be faster than a 2 year old single-core PC w/XP.

I have the same bug. Every time I take my hand off the mouse, the cursor
pauses on the screen. It's very annoying!!!!
