Vista Sleep, Hibernation Internet Connection Lost

F

Frederick Smith

Hi Robert, Barb,
I went back to the factory, HP style. I used my recovery DVD to restore the
laptop to factory default image. I then installed only the Windows updates
recommended, no driver updates.
I have the same issue as in my previous post. If my internet connection is
restored after Sleep or Hibernation, it is lost after about a minute or so.
Power cycling the router seems to reconnect, or using IPCONFIG /RELEASE and
IPCONFIG /RENEW.
Is this a Vista issue? Router? Check my previous post for specifics.
Thanks,
Fred

what happens if you give the NIC a static IP and DNS?

I works fine with a static IP and DNS. The Netgear(router) Tech I spoke to
helped me set this up as a work around. She also told me she experienced the
same problem with her Vista Premium PC.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I don't have time to
search for the history of your problem and refer back to a different
"thread". If you could find the last post that you refer to and
paste it in here so that we can see the history all in one place, it
would be helpful. It is considered a standard.

Fred

One other thing (can't remember if this was discussed) - do you have
Norton or something similar installed? Canyou temporarily uninstall
if you do?

and finally, if there is still a driver issue, the patch won't help.
so if you have tried several versions of the appropriate Nvidia

You are right. It was installed on 10/12. I must have missed it.
That's
why
I get the message, "The update does not apply to your system". It's
because
it was already installed?

Fred

before you do that, I'd like to go back to the statement you made
that http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/933872 would not

Ok,

After the factory reset:

After Windows Update:

I just copied what I found under "Driver Details".

Next, I used the update, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933872.

I performed steps 1-7 under RESOLUTION and rebooted. No
change.
However,
I
forgot to report one behaviour. After sleep or hibernation
mode,
[sometimes]Vista appears to be connected [router and

browsing
works, etc. BUT, the connection is lost after a minute or so.
Very
strange

clarify
anything for you?
Again, I only performed steps 1-7, not those following under

can you post the text output of

ipconfig /all from an elevated cmd prompt when the computer
is
in
the "bad" state?

Thanks Barb,
I performed steps 1-7 under RESOLUTION and rebooted. No
change.
However,
I
forgot to report one behaviour. After sleep or hibernation
mode,
[sometimes]Vista appears to be connected [router and
internet],
browsing
works, etc. BUT, the connection is lost after a minute or so.
Very
strange
as this is not the case after sleep or hibernation. Does this
clarify
anything for you?
Again, I only performed steps 1-7, not those following under
the
MORE
INFORMATION section. I am going to call NetGear and point out
this
article
to them and see if they can help. In the meantime, do you
have
anything
else
to add?
Fred

Hmmn, take a look at

if
you
haven't already.

The laptop is an HP dv6406nr. I added 2 gigs of memory,
otherwise
hardware
is as listed. Vista pre-installed. I use static IP

until
I
can
resolve the problem. This will explain the ipconfig /all

Which exact laptop do you have? Did it come with Vista
pre-installed
or was this an upgrade?

Can you please post the text output of

ipconfig /all

run from an elevated cmd prompt?

On Wed, 17 Oct 2007 12:08:46 -0400, "Frederick Smith"

The KB article did not solve the problem. I have the
latest
driver
for
my
Nvidia Gforce networking card. I have installed all
windows
updates.
I
leave
the router and modem on 24/7.

Hmm, I am tempted to either,

1. Get the latest Netgear router in this series, WGR614v8. I originally had
the WGR614v6 and swapped it for a WGR614v7.

2. Try another brand that supposedly is "Vista Ready".

What do you think? Is it worth a try?

Well, if all things are the same. WGR614v8 works for you. I had WGR614v7
[and before that WGR614v6].

Netgear told me that they had more trouble reports from Vista Premium users
than Vista Basic. I have Premium. Is this what you have?

Microcenter [AKA Rent-A-Center] has the WGR614 on sale for $34.99. The
sticky point is that the packaging states WGR614NA. It does not reveal the
version number.

Maybe I could go back with my cell phone and read off some serial numbers to
a Netgear tech until I find a WGR614v8? [This is assuming that the WGR614v8
will resolve this issue and Microcenter has any WGR614v8(s)]
