Vista Premium Networking Problems after Sleep, Hibernation 2nd Post

Frederick Smith

Hi,
Is there not a MS MVP who can help me with this? I have a HP laptop and HP
can not help any further. They say it's a MS problem, but my laptop does not
qualify for MS Tech Support because its OEM, HP.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933872 This article describe a little of
what I have been experiencing. I have my Vista laptop connected to my
Netgear WGR614v7 router via ethernet cable, NOT wireless.
When the laptop comes out of Sleep or Hibernation modes it loses the IP and
other networking info and can not reconnect automatically. Two things
correct this: 1. Power cycling the router 2. Using the IPCONFIG /RENEW. I
swapped my WGR614v6 for the WGR614v7, no change.
Is anyone else seeing this? And, the updates available in the article above
do not include help for Vista 32-bit. I tried both and they don't install on
the 32-bit platform. Is Microsoft going to issue something else for Vista
Premium 32-bit?
Thanks,
Fred

Have you tried Microsoft update? This link may help.

Windows Vista Update and downloadThis update may fix some DHCP issue - The
default gateway setting is lost when you wake a Windows Vista-based computer
from sleep ...

if the KB article isn't the solution, have you checked for NIC
driver updates? do you have all the updates or Vista from Windows
Update? the v7 was certified/logo'd as "works with Vista".

(you DO leave the router and your broadband modem on 24/7, right?)

Hi,
The KB article did not solve the problem. I have the latest driver for my
Nvidia Gforce networking card. I have installed all windows updates. I leave

Hi,
I have installed all MS updates available through Windows update. I used the
link below and installed update #1 on the list, KB929777, "Install this
update to address an issue in storport.sys which results in a system crash
when certain hardware configurations exist."
I did not fix the problem[no change].

Which exact laptop do you have? Did it come with Vista pre-installed
or was this an upgrade?

Can you please post the text output of

ipconfig /all

run from an elevated cmd prompt?

Thanks Barb,
I performed steps 1-7 under RESOLUTION and rebooted. No change. However, I
forgot to report one behaviour. After sleep or hibernation mode,
[sometimes]Vista appears to be connected [router and internet], browsing
works, etc. BUT, the connection is lost after a minute or so. Very strange
as this is not the case after sleep or hibernation. Does this clarify
anything for you?
Again, I only performed steps 1-7, not those following under the MORE
INFORMATION section. I am going to call NetGear and point out this article
to them and see if they can help. In the meantime, do you have anything else
to add?

Thanks Barb,
I performed steps 1-7 under RESOLUTION and rebooted. No change. However, I
forgot to report one behaviour. After sleep or hibernation mode,
[sometimes]Vista appears to be connected [router and internet], browsing

Hi Frederick,

Do you have a static or dynamic IP address? By static I mean one that you
use permanently and by dynamic one that your ISP assigns to you for the
session. If it is dynamic, then this could explain your problem. Most dynamic
addresses are issued on a time-lease basis, and if your ISP doesn't receive a
reply from your machine after a certain period of time (as is the case when
you put your machine to sleep or hibernate), then it will assume that the
address is free and will unallocate it from your connection and reallocate it
to someone else. If ISPs didn't do this, then there would soon be no
addresses available for future customers. I recommend that home users use a
dynamic address because this is much cheaper than having a static one. Static
addresses are useful for companies whose address on the Web must not change,
however their ISP will charge them for the privilege. I also use the
hibernate function on my machine and have a Netgear router, but because I
power off completely both my machine and router after hibernating, I don't
have this problem. You will probably be better off just using the hibernation
feature rather than sleep if you are running your machine on battery power.
In fact, I would recommend that you didn't use sleep at all. You should find
that in the short time that it takes your machine to restore from hibernation
(typically no more than 1 1/2 minutes), your router will have established a
connection for you. This is why I recommend that you power down your router
as well when you hibernate.

Hi,
Is there not a MS MVP who can help me with this? I have a HP laptop and
HP can not help any further. They say it's a MS problem, but my laptop
does not qualify for MS Tech Support because its OEM, HP.

of
what I have been experiencing. I have my Vista laptop connected to my
Netgear WGR614v7 router via ethernet cable, NOT wireless.
When the laptop comes out of Sleep or Hibernation modes it loses the IP
and
other networking info and can not reconnect automatically. Two things
correct this: 1. Power cycling the router 2. Using the IPCONFIG /RENEW.
I
swapped my WGR614v6 for the WGR614v7, no change.
Is anyone else seeing this? And, the updates available in the article
above
do not include help for Vista 32-bit. I tried both and they don't
install on
the 32-bit platform. Is Microsoft going to issue something else for
Vista
Premium 32-bit?
Thanks,
Fred

Thanks Dwarf,

I have the same issue after sleep or hibernation. After the Vista wakes, the
internet connection shows connected, but then disconnects after about a
minute or so.
I am using a static IP for the moment until I can figure out the problem.

Can you
1: disable the wireless adapter in device manager for now
2: unbind IPv6 from the wired connection

reboot

any better?

Thanks Barb,
Keep in mind that when the laptop exits sleep mode it is connected to the
internet and then disconnects after about a minute or so.

Hi,
Is there not a MS MVP who can help me with this? I have a HP laptop and
HP can not help any further. They say it's a MS problem, but my laptop
does not qualify for MS Tech Support because its OEM, HP.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933872 This article describe a little
of
what I have been experiencing.
Thanks,
Fred
