Vista RC1 will not install

I tried to install Vista RC1 on a machine that previously had Vista Beta2
installed on it. I downloaded the iso file and burned it to DVD with two
different programs, Roxio and Nero. With both DVDs the installation
terminated with the following error:

The installation was canceled

Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for
installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code
0x800706F8

This is not an isolated case. If you search the web your will find quite a
few people with this same problem. Is anyone else reading this newsgroup
having this problem? If Microsoft is monitoring this newsgroup, do you have a
solution? This is causing a lot of negative comments/feedback about RC1.

I can't get past "Windows is installing files."

I'm installing on VMWare. Vista Beta2 went on fine (as did all other OS's).

I tried reburning the DVD. When that didn't work, I downloaded RC1 a second
time and burned a new DVD again. Always stops at the same place, "Windows is
loading files," with the progress bar indicating it's fully loaded.

Unfortunately, my experience is almost the same in this case.
Obviously we're not the only ones, saying,

Did you follow the instructions to burn the image at 1x or 2x?
I burned at 2x (lowest speed my drive allows) and installation went off
without a hitch.
Also, IIRC, the download site provided information to check the integrity of
your download. Did yours check out?

you can also try downloading isomagic. using this you can extract the files
to a directory on your hard drive, and just run the setup install from that
directory to do an upgrade.

Like you, I burned the DVD as slow as the machine would allow. I did,
however, miss the part about "verifying the integrity" -- can you give a link
to that?

I subsequently deleted all other OS's from VMWare, on the off-chance that
that was causing the difficulty...alas, in vain. Still no RC1, and I had to
go back and reinstall Beta2 and all the rest. No problem with Beta2.

The following information was on the download page:

X86

CRC: 0xB3519FCA
SHA: 0xE00B4EBBC81FB420CF047973B95A9CFB7CDF51B7

vista_5600.16384.060829-2230_x86fre_client-LR1CFRE_EN_DVD.iso

X64

CRC: 0x59C867D0
SHA: 0x8E4DE7A72C828A3543FF1663243EB0836DA07EEA

vista_5600.16384.060829-2230_x64fre_client-LR1CxFRE_EN_DVD.iso

Offhand, I don't have a link to a utility that can produce the CRC and/or
SHA for your download (as I didn't need it), but I'm sure somebody here can
point you to one.

Hello !
I have the same problem with rc1 !
and I also tried to update from the beta2 witch worked perfectly to
the Rc1, at the end of the installation the system was dead !
It's incredible ! what as been changed to that test version ?

I tried with Microsoft VirtualPC2004, Witch is free now, it worked !
But the performance are very poor compared to VMWARE !

Add the lines

svga.MaxWidth="640"
svga.maxHeight="480"

to the .vmx-file of the VM and you will find that the installation proceeds.
After having installed the RC1, close down the VM, delete or comment away
those lines and you are free to proceed with other screen settings.

I too can't get Vista RC1 to load. Does anyone have a cure to this error
code? The computer is wiped clean, no previous installs, 3% into the
install, I get the same error code and dialog as below. Any help from
Microsoft on this would be great.

I just had the same experience trying to install
Vista x64, build 5728. It turned out to be the
hard drive. I put in a brand new drive and it
installed in about 30 minutes without any problems.

You can try using a low level utility to clean
your hard drive and scan for errors to see if
this might alleviate the problem.

Thanks for the input. I have two different drives in the computer. I have
tried installing on each individually while unplugging the other. I have run
a Western Digital program on them to see if there is a problem and there
isn't. I even had the program do a full erase of one of the drives, and
still no go.

I really don't understand at this point why Microsoft isn't offering
anything in the way of advice, it would appear that quite a few people have
had this problem and no one is coming up with a solid reason/cure.

Tap - tap - tap, is this thing on? Microsoft people? You there? Little
help?

i had the same issue once installing windows 98. the OS installer formatted
the hard drive improperly so the install got messed up. formating that hard
drive in another PC fixed that issue. the installer was formating the hard
drive to fat32 from ntfs. i learned to never use windows installer to format
the hard disk unless that hard disk has no partitions on it. i think that
still may be an issue.

Ya, I too have had a few formating issues like that in the past. I have
deleted partitions on each drive multiple times and reformated. The
formating process though is much faster than any OS has done in the past, so
that does throw in a concern, but that it starts installing and quits part
way through would make me think that it is finding the drive to be ok.

Thanks for the input.

I ordered the CD from MS, and it appeared to work until the very end when I
was presented with the 0x800706f8 error. Hardware and software checked out
except for the video card, and that was not a show stopper according to the
program.

I have now tried RC1 and RC2, multiple burns of the disc, checked the iso
file to make sure it is good, I've done just about everything I can think of.
The only thing I haven't tried at this point and may end up doing, is to get
a new DVD drive to see if maybe it's a DVD drive problem.

Any help from a Microsoft person would be really great. I see a lot of
people having issues like this and so far no cures.

Hi peple. !
Error Code: 0x800706F8 is simply errors of Microsoft developers. Is easy to
fix it!
When ocoured shut down computer (not restart) and try again. This must solve
problem.
