Vista mail outbox message stuck

This solution works. Note that doing this will wipe out every message in
Windows Mail. A good work-around is to export (File/Export/Messages). Select
the folders that you want to keep and complete the wizard. Once you've gone
through the process of deleting the WindowsMail.MSMessageStore file, you can
import back the good messages.

Today I had that problem again (message stuck in Outbox folder).
Unfortunately WMTool (which is in fact only GUI port to esentutl.exe) do
not helped. Finally I deleted WindowsMail.MSMessageStore file. While
restarting, Windows Mail automatically recovered it from a backup file
(it must be a recent backup in Backup folder, of course) and the problem
was gone.

Additionally I must say, in Outbox folder was many orphan message files
with 0 byte size. So, there must be some serious problem with WM
database engine...

I think you do not have to get rid of any files except the two
.smessagestore files. The one under the Windows Mail directory and the
one under the Windows Mail\backup\new directory.

I'll do some more tests.

Get the location of the Windows Mail datbase folder in Tools |
Options | Advanced tab | Maintenance button | Store Folders button.
Close Windows Mail.

Navigate to that folder via Windows Explorer.
Drill down thru the subfolders to find the Outbox folder.

Delete everything in there or move it elsewhere.

Now restart Windows Mail and see if things are working correctly.

I had that error before and this is NOT a problem with any Windows
Mail folder, but with corrupt database file
%Userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
Mail\WindowsMail.MSMessageStore. Microsoft tools cannot repir it. The
only way i know to repair it is exporting all email from the store
and removing this file and it's backup copy from Backup folder, or
maybe the whole Windows Mail folder.

There's a fix newer than WMUtil. Download and install it with Windows Mail
not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether to use the 32-bit version or
the 64-bit version, try the 32-bit version first. Certain common
antivirus programs, such as most of those from Norton or McAfee,
or a recent one from Trend, tend to cause such problems, so if you
have such a program, remember where to find the fix - you are
likely to need it again.

Looks like you're replying to an old message, one written before the
latest fix was written. Download and install it with Windows Mail
not running:

I have an "I" alert on my incoming mail and I can't delete it, move it or
forward it. It tells me I have low disc space and low memory, now this only
happens with Windows Vista, is there some sort of patch for this??

Interference from antivirus programs often causes stuck messages, and
error messages about low memory. What if any antivirus programs
do you have?

For a temporary fix, download and install this hotfix, with Windows
Mail not running:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it's labelled as for mail stuck in the Outbox, it also works in
other folders. If you don't know whether you have a 32-bit version
of Vista or a 64-bit version, try the hotfix for the 32-bit version first.
This hotfix is also available as part of Vista SP1, but that takes longer
to install.

My problems is with a 'ghost' e-mail stuck in my Inbox that resists all
efforts to read, move, or delete it. I tried going to:
AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders\Inbox and deleting the 0mb
files, but to no avail. It's still there. Any suggestions?

Use this Microsoft fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/941090

Although it only mentions 'outbox', it works for all mail folders.

No, that's a different issue.

Not sure why your old emails are disappearing from Sent Items.
Which antivirus program are you running? Any other third party
security program like anti-spam or anti-malware?

It is over a year since you wrote your suggestions but they solved my
problem. I could not delete an item from my Draft folder. I used your link
www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/ and prominently displayed on the page is the link to
downloading the solution. While the link says it solves the problem when
items in the Outbox cannot be sent, it solved mine as well. Thanks. It was
not a big problem since it only occurred in the Draft folder but it was
irritating.
