PS: really appreciate the help you're trying to give me! I'm probably going
to install windows vista from scratch (and yes, I actually have a full
version, so no "work around" for me!;-). Last time, I upgraded from XP, and
there are all sorts of things stuck in Add/Remove programs that I cant get
rid of. I just hate the time it takes to reinstall everything from scratch -
however quick the installation itself takes!

Those two entries for java are the only difference between us.
I'd guess that you have the MS java installed and I have the
Sun version. I can't imagine that would make your drivers
invisible, though. I'm seeing many other people with exactly
the same problem, so I'm betting that MS will have to jump on
this bug fairly soon. Meanwhile I'm out of ideas (

Oh god, don't even get me started on Sun's Java Lol!

I really wanted to use Calgoo (the calendar application) and it required Sun
Java to be installed... Quite honestly, i would rather never see that Sun
Java icon ever again in my life. That said, i really dont think this could
be the reason as you say...

Ive sent files to a guy a Microsoft as requested; ill be sure to let you
know.. and yes, i'm not the only one!

Try this:

Navigate to C:\windows\inf (substitute a different drive letter for
whichever one your OS is installed on) and find the file infcache.1...

Hi there!

Sounds like you know your way around Vista better than I do. Do you
know why so many people are having similar problems finding drivers?

I've been sending some files to Microsoft to look at this - and I promised
I'd update you...

At some point it would appear I installed (the wrong) blue tooth driver and
it "corrupted the driver database".

He says they've fond the problem, and now just seeing how it will be fixed
(either through download or "change to Vista itself" - which presumably...
SP1!)

eLC,
I got the same problem and I think that should be the solution.
1) Open regedit and go to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
2) Take note of the drive reported in "BootDir". This is your default drive.
3) Edit the "Installation Sources" and delete all occurrences different from
the default drive.

For example, in my computer:
BootDir = C:\
Installation Sources = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERSTORE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS
C:\WINDOWS\
C:\WINDOWS\INF

This patch has fixed the problem on my computer

Ciao from Rome, Italy
