Vista is unable to find drivers

Guest

My Vista Business install is now unable to find device drivers by itself.
This used to work before I installed Daemon Tools v4.08, which I have now
uninstalled, but it did not resolve my problem.

When plugging in eg. a thumb drive, Vista used to detect it, and then
install the native driver automatically.
Now it shows up with a "No driver found" dialog, and I have to point it to
the Windows\System32 folder manually each and every time!

I guess there is some setting that has been altered, but I cannot find which
one.
Does anyone have a faintest idea to this?

Thanks!

DId you ever find a solution to this problem? I have started experencing this
also.

No, the only semi-solution I've heard of is re-installing Vista - which is
not an option for me.
There surely must be a registry setting to control its driver path, I can't
believe that the kernel has been tampered with, thus needing a ful
re-install...

I am suddenly having the same trouble. Even trying to install a
generic printer says "Unable to find any drivers for this device"...
But I'm not trying to install a partcular device, just any printer!

Anyone with a solution with be rewarded with great amounts of praise!

When it give the option of you browsing for drivers manually, point it to
C:\Windows - It should fine them.

Yes, this is a temporary solution. But why doesn't Vista look there first by
itself anymore?
Argh...!

Not to mention that with something like a HP printer, it prompts you for the
location of the driver about 20 times. I had already installed the printer
when things were still working then one day I plug the USB in to print
something and prompt prompt prompt prompt..... My VISTA was raining ;)

I finaly nuked the install and rebuilt it. I pray that this problem does not
come back or I will have to go back to XP...

I still want to follow this problem so if anybody DOES figure out a solution
get it to eLC and they can report if it works or not.

If I point it to C:\Windows it finds nothing, I have to point to the
exact foler in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\

And even then I get this error and all fails:
"Printer driver was not installed. Unable to find a core driver
package that is required by the printer driver package"

Any ideas?

I'm having the same issue with a USB/Serial device. Drivers are supposed to
work on Vista 64. I've loaded the drivers, using their wizard. Says they
are loaded, but when I plug in the device, it does not find the drivers.
I've tried pointing to C:/windows with no luck and even C:. Device manager
shows the USB device but no drivers. Dealer says he has sold thousands of
these devices and had no issues. Says he has a VISTA 64 bit machine and had
no issues. Any suggestions before I call the Geek Squad?

Many 64 bit systems coming with Vista installed have Vista 32 bit not Vists
64 bit installed on them so be sure that if you are trying to install Vista
64 bit drivers that you do not have Vista 32bit installed on your system.

Checked and it is running 64 bit version.

I found that after using Vista for a while, it seems to start losing its desktop
settings and various Registry settings. Especially if you start "tweaking" the
OS using hardly-ready tweaker tools.
I kept losing my ATI drivers on shut-down some how, and when I started up, I
encountered the infamous "win32k.sys" BSOD because Vista couldn't find the video
driver anymore. After encountering this error several times, and going back in
through Safe Mode and restoring the driver or Vista (or the last known good
configuration), I eventually was not even able to do that anymore, since even
Safe Mode would not start.

This might be because Vista's shut down code is not quite up-to-snuff, and fails
to SAVE your settings/Register every once in a while (probably caused by
failing to flush out the System caches properly on shut-down because of
Microsoft's desire to shut the System down quickly because of user-complaints
from previous versions of Windows). XP had this problem (and still does) for
a long time. Microsoft has STILL not fixed it in the last 6 years. Hopefully,
they will be willing to endure the complaints of the few "power users" in order
to make sure Vista shuts down properly this time around for the MAJORITY.

If any Microsoft engineers are reading this, PLEASE fix this problem, and don't
take 6 years to do it?

A long time ago, I learned a very valuable lesson: It's BETTER to have a
well-running (that is, PEACEFUL) edifice than it is to have the "the best" one,
since more customers will keep coming back to a well-run edifice, but WON'T
necessarily come back to the "best" one. Let's face it: It's the ones who keep
coming back year after year who make us the greatest profit, not the ones who
spend a few bucks more than everyone else every few years.

If the "best one" has rude waiters who are always being pushed to be faster or
more "efficient", or have high-prices, only the "High Rollers" will go there
consistently. The only places where "High Rollers" make money for the
organization are casinos, because they spend more money losing to the house than
they do when receiving "comps" from the Management (which don't make them a
dime).

Hear this, Microsoft:
Most of us want a "Well-running" OS, rather than one which is very " fancy and
high-falutin' ".

The "fancy" is ok, and (sometimes) can be "icing on the cake", but PLEASE don't
give us a "fancy" OS at the price of a "well-running" one.

I read this on another Forum site - this is a direct copy of the text

"It has been suggested by someone that the Reg key
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion should be changed.

Are you sure that shouldn't be
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\DevicePath ?
That's where I see %SystemRoot%\inf on my machine.
This key originally was set to %SystemRoot%\inf

I have changed this to c:\Windows\inf;
c:\windows\system32\DriverStore;
%SystemRoot%\inf"

I'd like to hear from everyone who is having this problem of missing
or unlocatable drivers. Please type this at a command prompt:
echo %SystemRoot%
and tell us what you see.

For those who don't know how to get a command prompt:
Start > Accessories > Command Prompt

I get

"C:\Windows
C:\Users\William (my username)
"

Not sure what this is supopsed to mean though as i am nto familier with
command prompt etc, sorry.

That's the correct response (too bad).

I'm just groping blindly here for any reason that your drivers
can't be found automatically the way they should be. Your
problem is way too common to be caused by stray cosmic rays
(my favorite excuse for rare events ;o) so it must be a real
bug.

Well, here's another straw I can grasp at (blindly):

At the command prompt, type 'set' <Enter>.
You should see a bunch of stuff displayed.

Now right-click in the command window and pick 'Select All'.
You can now paste that text into your reply to this post
with Ctrl-v or 'Edit > Paste'. (Before you post it make sure
it doesn't contain any juicy personal secrets ;o)

This may not help, but it can't hurt.
