Under the control panel, then under security center. I HAVE VIRUS PROTECTION
THERE HOW DO I TURN IT OFF? I didn't put it there it sure looks loke
microsoft to me its called windows security center and it updates from
microsoft.

security center is not an anti virul software. instead it is a notification
that your system is unprotected. Some trojans, virus, etc.. have learned to
turn off the anti virus's without the user's knowledge. If the security
center is inconvenient for you then you can run services.msc and disable it.
Look down the listing for it, somewhere in the w's i think. Hope you are
protected.....?!

I have a vanilla installation of XP Home. Under Security Center I
only have "Internet Options", "Firewall" and "Automatic Updates".

I have chosen to not use ANY of these since I use a hardware firewall
and NOT Internet Explorer and prefer to manage my Windows Updates
myself.

If you go into Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Services you can
STOP the Security Center Service and then set it to "Disabled".

I hope that helps to calm you frustration.
