Rt Click MyComputer>select
Properties>Advanced>Performance-Settings>Advanced>Virtual Memory. Should be
at
least some value there. Change if needed.

May be an interesting article from James A. Eshelman regarding virtual
memory: http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

Virtual memory refers to the pagefile. RAM is hardware on your motherboard.
These entities are not the same.

Thus, the fact that your 1GB RAM is not relevant.

Virtual memory refers to the pagefile.

Actually, no. The term "Virtual Memory" refers to the sum of all the
memory, both real (RAM) and page file, present.

However, 3MB is a very small amount of memory for a program to use. I
don't know the particular program, but my guess is that it's so old
that it gets confused by the amounts of memory in a modern system, and
thinks there isn't enough present.

Although it's Jim Eshelman's web site, this excellent article is by
the late MVP, Alex Nichol.

You are of course right, sorry for being so sloppy - and my gratitude to
Alex Nichol.

What I should have said was
"Messages about a shortage of virtual memory usually mean that your pagefile
is too small."
