Viewer 2003 - Digital Certificate Tampered With???

S

Steve Rindsberg

Weird. Powerpoint 2003 SP1

I choose File, Package for CD and walk through the steps in the wizard, choose
files etc. and then pick the option to include the Viewer and choose Copy to
Folder.

Almost immediately I get:

"The digital certificate for the PowerPoint Viewer is invalid or has been
tampered with. To include the viewer, reinstall Package for CD and the
PowerPoint Viewer.

This would be excellent advice. If it worked. It doesn't. Nor does
reinstalling the viewer.

Googled the error message, came up with a hit on MS; the page says that this
is a problem that SP1 corrects.

Nuh-uh. AAMOF, another system w/o SP1 doesn't have this problem.

Clues? Thanks.

It's not a problem here - - PowerPoint 2003 SP1, Windows XP SP 2, Viewer
V.11.0.5703. However, based on a quick look at the EULA, I'm pretty sure that's
the
previous Viewer version, not the current one available for download.

Hmm. That's the same as is installed here (where it doesn't work). Can't
uninstall it because if it's installed along with Office, it doesn't show up in
Add/Remove (and doesn't get its own icon in the start menu. A bit annoying, that
one.

The one on the PC that does work is 11.0.5530

I'll try installing the latest download on the PC where it's busted now.

[later]

Not such a good idea. The old viewer's still in Program Files\<mso2003 install
folder>\OFFICE11 and the new one's in Program Files\Microsoft Office\PowerPoint
Viewer\ (where it put itself w/o asking).

Both EXEs carry the same version number (only the dates have been changed to
protect the not so innocent).

As always, they've left some wiggle room for independent developers to do the job
right, eh? ;-)

However, based on a quick look at the EULA, I'm pretty sure that's

Hello Steve,

Perhaps the system was patched with SP-1 before Package for CD was ever
used (so PowerPoint Viewer files were not patched because they had not yet
been installed from the original disc). Try the following:

* Unpatch (?) Office/PowerPoint (remove SP-1 and any post SP-1 Office
patches)
* Reinstall Office/PowerPoint so that ALL of the Office/PowerPoint
components are set to Run from Computer.
* Apply Office SP-1 patch

Hi John,
Perhaps the system was patched with SP-1 before Package for CD was ever
used (so PowerPoint Viewer files were not patched because they had not yet
been installed from the original disc). Try the following:

That's quite possible; I'm fairly sure I installed P4CD along with Office but
I'm positive that I never used it on this computer before this, so SP-1
would've been installed before first P4CD use.

I don't see an option to remove SP-1 though so as long as reinstalling Office
is in the cards anyhow, I'll remove Office and reinstall, make sure P4CD's
included, use it a time or two and THEN SP-1 the suckah.

[notes during reinstall]
Uninstalled, restarted Windows.

Started the install again. I must've installed P4CD before; it's set to
install by default and I wouldn't have changed that. Anything I suspect I
might want (and P4CD certainly would have been high on the list) is set to run
from the computer, not on first use or the like.

After reinstall (everything set to run from computer), fired up PPT, was able
to successfully P4CD to folder.

Rebooted, checked my SR-1 files and since they're from July 2004, I'm getting
the patch off the web instead this time. Dum de dum ... anybody ever mention
how wildly overoptimistic the download times on Office Update are? ;-)

Reboot again per the patcher's request

Try packaging up the same file and ... guess what. Same error as before.
Somebody been tamperin' with Bill's digits. "The digital certificate for the
PowerPoint Viewer is invalid or has been tampered with. To include the viewer,
reinstall Package for CD and the PowerPoint Viewer."

Been there. Done that before. Non-joyful outcome. Bummer.

Where to next, sir?

Hi Steve,

Please check versions of the following files:

Office "language ID" folder(s) (i.e. 1033):
- ppvwintl.dll

Office 11 folder:
- pptview.exe
- saext.dll
- intldate.dll

Also, please verify whether or not you have multiple versions of any of
these files on your system (language packs, viewer installs, etc.).

Thanks,

Hi John,

Thanks for following up with this. Much obliged. If you need a system report
or the like, just yell. email to steve atsignthingie pptools dot com is fine
too.

FWIW, other misc info that might help:

Office is installed to C:\Program Files\MSO2003
Windows 2000 SP3 build 2195

In addition to English (United States) I have English (United Kingdom) and
Microsoft IME 2000 (Japanese) installed. English (US) is the selected
language.

Though this is a test box that I run virtual machines on, this is all happening
in the host OS, not a VM.

The rest of the info's below:
Please check versions of the following files:

Office "language ID" folder(s) (i.e. 1033):
- ppvwintl.dll

File version: 11.0.5510.0
159,808 bytes
Created July 15, 2003
The signature is OK, says Properties
Only one copy of the file on the system
Office 11 folder:
- pptview.exe
File version: 11.0.5703.0
1,782,840 bytes
Created Sept 8 2003
This digital signature is OK
- saext.dll
File version: 11.0.5510.0
211,512 bytes
Created July 14, 2003
This digital signature is OK
- intldate.dll
11.0.5510.0
64,064 bytes
Created July 14, 2003
This digital signature is OK
Also, please verify whether or not you have multiple versions of any of
these files on your system (language packs, viewer installs, etc.).

PPTVIEW.EXE:
There's another copy of PPTVIEW.EXE tucked away in a directory (off the path)
holding the files for a Win31 install (this is a text box with VPC and
suchlike)

SAEXT.DLL
INTLDATE.DLL
No add'l copies

Hi Steve,

Testing says that those are all good version #'s. Now they want to know
what version of MSO.DLL is on the affected system.

Hi John,

Systems. Got two of 'em to play with now.

On the first one (that we're already dealing with) there are two copies of
MSO.DLL

In:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Office10
9767kb dated 11/6/2001
Version 10.0.3501.0

And in:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE11
12,216kb
8/8/2003
Version 11.0.6360.0

On the other computer, also two versions, in the same two folders. Same MSO.DLL
in the OFFICE11 folder; Version 10.0.2625.0 in the Office10 folder.

The second computer has several versions of Office installed.
The first computer may also have had a prior version installed (the version of
MSO.DLL identifies itself as having come from Office XP) but I can't swear to
what, when and in what order.

Sounds like maybe you've fingered something likely here? FWIW, I renamed the
older of the two DLLs to DLB and restarted Windows, tried Packaging again and
still got the same msg.

Hi Steve,

Looks like the problem is caused by your MSO.DLL.

It didn't get updated with the patch, probably because it was in use at the
time.

The version of MSO.DLL that eliminates the problem should be 11,931 KB and
has modified date of 6/17/2004.

Pas d'joy. No go.

As it happens, I'd later installed Front Page 2003 which must've put that same
version in place. But to be certain, I renamed it, renamed the other version
of MSO.DLL, restarted Windows to make sure neither of them was in use, then
reinstalled SP1 using the full file admin install.

It installed the version you mention above in C:\Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE11

Fired up PPT, tried package to CD to folder and it still thinks digital
signatures are corrupt.

Where to next, mister?

Thanks, John. I'm more than happy to keep following it up.

If it'd be easier to have the tester give me a shout directly by email, that's
fine. Whatever suits best.
