Video Insertion

Help!!
I am receiving an error in Powerpoint when I try to insert video (mpg) that
says "Powerpoint couldn't insert video from the selected file. Either the
file is non-standard, or quicktime is not installed properly". I know this
problem is not uncommon when third party software has messed with the mci
handler but I think I have tried everything standard to repair this and
still get the error. Here's the details:

I am on a PC platform running Windows 2000 and Powerpoint XP (2002). The
file inserts and runs fine on other machines but will not play back on my
machine (i just see the black placeholder box). I have tried to insert it
with the Insert/Movies menu and as an object. In the former case I get the
above error, in the latter case I get an error that says "mplay32 has
generated errors and will be shut down". I also get this error if I simply
run mplay32 and try to open the file.

So far I have "completely" uninstalled Qucicktime and WinAmp and then run
Noron Utilities Windows Repair to see if it would catch anything in the
registry etc. I have gone to the Registry MCI and MCI32 keys (under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/ etc. etc. etc.) and the settings are all identical to
what various technotes say they should be. I have gone to a machine the
inserts and plays the video fine and copied its version of the mciavi32.dll,
mcicda.dll, mciqtz32.dll, mciseq.dll, mciwave.dll, mciavi.drv, mciseq.drv,
and mciwave.drv files to my machine. I have completely reinstalled Office
XP (after removing the files and deleting the software registry key) and
completely reinstalled Media Player (9) and the codecs.

As you can see I am fishing for anything and can not think of whatelse to
do. I am pretty sure there is some registry item(s) that I am not aware of
that are messing me up. I would greatly appreciate any help short of
reformatting my machine and reinstalling Windows which I am not ready to
spend a week dealing with.

Thanks in advance.

What you haven't mentioned is the codec that was used to compress the video
file. It is very possible that the codec is not installed on your system,
but is installed on the other systems. What is the source of the video file
and do you know the codec that was used?

Here's a suggestion, Make sure you have the latest
version of Mplayer or Quicktime...I'm almost positive
that's where the problem is - there's some conflict with
the OS, etc. I believe an updated version of Qtime or
Mplayer - whichever you use, will work fine

Thanks for the reply. Your articles have been very useful in this
troubleshooting process. To answer your question the video was brought into
Adobe Premier 6.5 from digital video (using mpeg2 I believe) and output
using the Adobe mpeg1 encoder. For what it's worth, I can play these video
clips with no problem in Windows Media Player which seems to suggest I have
the right codec. Here are the ones I have installed: Cinepak Codec by Radius
Indeo Codec by Intel Indeo Video 5.10 Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Codec v3
Microsoft RLE Codec Microsoft Video 1 Microsoft Windows Media Video 9 VCM
msh261.drv msh263.drv msyuv.dll

The list is the same on the machine I have success with except it doesn't
have the Windows Media Video 9 one or the msyuv.dll.
