There is a common error when trying to play a video clip from within
PowerPoint presentation. In searching through the Microsoft Knowledg
Base one article'(266983)
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;266983&Product=ppt2000
recommends you _DO_NOT_ add a video into a presentation but rather ad
a hyperlink to the video file. This will open it with the appropriat
player using the correct codec. We were getting the following erro
opening certain MPG files in PowerPoint.
The specified file cannot be played on the specified MCI device. Th
file may be corrupt, not in the correct format, or no fil
When the hyperlink is added in PowerPoint we get the following erro
(on some computers). This error is referenced in the same article i
Microsoft Knowledge Base and suggests opening the video clip usin
MPLAY32, which will tell you if the the media is using the appropriat
codec. When you open the same MPG file in MPLAY32 you the followin
error.
Unknown problem while loading the specified device drver
This is because in the registry ke
*[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Window
NT\CurrentVersion\MCIExtensions]* the MPG extension has to link to th
mciqtz32.dll file in *[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Window
NT\CurrentVersion\MCI32]*. To do so just change the MPEGVIDEO key t
mciqtz32.dll in the *\MCI32* registry folder or change the MP
extension in the *\MCIExtensions* registry folder to MPEGVIDEO2. Thi
will allow the MPG file to open correctly in MPLAY32 and i
