Vicious cycle to remove programs from start up

Duane

I finally learned how to remove programs that start when
I turn on the computer (using system utility
configuration), but whenever I restarted the computer it
would warn me that it was starting under "selective start-
up" because some of the programs weren't selected to
run. These programs are MSN Messenger, Roxio CD Creator,
and MSN Money, all programs that instantly pop up on the
screen after I turn on the computer. (Roxio only started
to do this after I recently upgraded to XP) Anyway, I
want to know if there is a permanent way to disable these
programs, and use a normal start up. I can only find
them in the system utility config by running msconfig. I
can't seem to find a way to remove them, I uncheck them
but then I'm not under normal start-up, it's
frustrating. These programs aren't needed. I can start
them manually if I want to use them. Thanks.

Duane,

I share your frustrations with MSConfig - it's not the most user
friendly management program. I use Startup Control Panel (free) from
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml - it gives you a little Control
Panel applet that shows all items in 5 startup lists, and lets you
drag and drop to add items too. Startup Monitor (free), from the same
website, monitors any additions to those lists, and alerts you anytime
any program tries to add anything.

Cheers,

Chuck

I'm sorry, but both of you are incorrect. The system configuration utility
allows you to temporarily prevent items from starting with Windows in order
to troubleshoot startup or shutdown problems.

The correct way to stop software from starting with Windows is to open each
program's user interface and look through the menus for the program's
configuration options. There you will usually see the option to have the
program start with Windows or not.

If a program does not offer this option in its menus (and you did not place
a shortcut to the program in the Startup folder), then your only remaining
options are to edit the registry - which doesn't always work - or to
uninstall the program.
