VGA SILENCER FOR RADEON 9700 PRO

Chalky

Can anyone tell me about their experiences with a Artic Cooling VGA Silencer
and a Radeon 9700 PRO or similar card?

I want to
1. Overlock so I can max out antialiasing and anisotropic filtering
2. Kill some of the Noise

How difficult is the installation? I really want to overclock but I can't
afford to destroy a good graphics card.

It is much quiter.

Was easy enough. The old heatsink is attached to GPU with double sided tape.
Just pull slowly. The heatsink hardly gets warm.

Yeah, thats prolly the only place you can kill the gpu - use a hair dryer to
soften the gunk (as per the instructions) and you should be okay. the other
thing is *not to remove the shim* (you will know what I mean when you see
it).

Double sided tape? Shim? I suspect all 9700 Pros (video cards in general)
are not created equally....Depends on manufacturer.

Attached to circuit card around the GPU. All 9700/9800's have this shim,
that I have seen.

So what kind of performance increase should I expect? What settings do you
use? I ordered mine a few hours ago :)

Thanks for the input,

I can run 3dmark01 at up to 410/360 without problems, but Atitool shows
errors above 401. BTW, this is with the fan in Silent mode. I could
perhaps go a little higher with it in High mode.

How hard was it to pull off? Could it be cut off instead like with a razor
knife?
I have this vision of the solder ripping off the board and the chip pulling off.

Some of them are kindof glued on with this yellow/brown thermal glue. Just
grab hold of the HS, give it a bit of a wobble and it will break lose, no
problem.

I got this to eliminate the high pitched noise of 9700 Pro's stock cooler. I
run on high speed as I cannot hear it on high. The heat sink hardly gets
warm. I never overclocked stock. I got memory to 370 at first but when I
started computer up next day I say sparkly squares with card cool. I backed
mem down to 351 and has been fine for long time. The GPU has worked fine at
any speed I tried. I am at 364.5 MHz now. I could go higher but what is the
point? I do not want to stress system and it works fine now.

"Thermal" tape, on the GPU.

Mine had thermal compound, no tape.

The frame. In my case the surface of the core was just above it so a thin
film of compound was all that was necessary. No "shim" to worry about.
