verbatim hi-speed usb drive not hi-speed

i've seen a few posts about this issue but none of the suggestions have
worked so far...here's the problem:

i have a verbatim store 'n' go 2gb usb flash drive...it has two LEDs,
blue and red, that light up when they are in hi-speed or non-hi-speed
mode, respectively...i just built this PC, and every port i plug it
into, even ports that the manufacturer sent with a "hi-speed certified"
sticker on it register as non-hi-speed...i always get the red
light...the drive works fine, but i paid for speed, too...

i have:
epox 9NPA+ultra mobo
amd 64 3500+ proc
1gb ram
x300se pcie video card
windows xp pro w/ sp2

i've taken the liberty of plugging the drive into several other
computers to see what happens...same thing...always red...

i've checked my bios...the settings say "diabled" "1.1" or
"1.1+2.0"...i've tried them all...always the red LED...

i've uninstalled drivers...i've reinstalled drivers...i've updated
drivers...i've downloaded the latest drivers i know of from
nvidia...still red...

i'm starting to see red, and i don't mean the light...

any ideas?
