HI-SPEED USB Device Plugged into non-HI-SPEED USB Hub

George Proudman

I just purchased a new copy of Window XP Professional and
installed it on my Sony Notebook computer. When I plug
in some of my USB devices (printer, floppy drive, etc) I
am getting a message that states: "HI-SPEED USB Device
Plugged into a non-HI-Speed USB Hub".

Clicking the message for assistance, I get information
that states: "The USB Composite Device is a USB HI-SPEED
device and will function at reduced speed when plugged
into a non-HI-SPEED port."

The next line reads: "There are no HI-SPEED USB Host
Controllers installed on this computer."

The recommendation states: "The USB Composite Device will
function at reduced speed. You must add a HI-SPEED Host
Controller to this computer to obtain maximum
performance."

I called Sony and they said that this is a function of
Windows XP Service Pack 1. They suggested uninstalling
SP1 and reinstalling. The Windows XP Pro installation I
purchased must have had SP1 already installed on it,
because I did not need to install SP1 when I checked for
updates at Microsoft. I do not see a way to remove or
install SP1, since I didn't have to install it in the
first place. If I must perform this removal and re-
installation, how is this done?

My computer has three USB ports which were all working
for the past year with no problem on a OEM Version of
Windows XP provided by Sony. I can reinstall Sony's
System Recovery, but that limits other issues, such as
partition size, thus I purchased my own copy of Windows
XP Professions so I didn't have OEM restrictions. How do
I correct this issue and install HI-SPEED USB Host
Controllers?

Please let me know how to proceed.

Check to make sure you have SP1 installed - I bet you don't. Go
START/SETTINGS/SYSTEM. On the 'General' tab under System you will see what
type of XP you are running Home/Pro, Version 2002, and under that will have
Service Pack 1 (or 1a). If it's not listed, it's not installed. Go to the
MS download (not updates) site and download it from there.

You must run SP1 or SP1a to have USB 2.0. Did you do this after yo
upgraded to XP Pro

Ummm.... Not too many ideas. I think first I would verify that SP1 is truly
installed: Go START/SETTINGS/SYSTEM. On the 'General' tab under System you
should see:

Microsoft WidowsXP Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 1 (or 1a)

If it doesn't have Service Pack 1 (or 1a), try downloading again.

Then, still in the SYSTEM popup, click on 'Hardware' tab and then select
"Device Manager" Towards the bottom of the list that pops up there will be
"Universal Serial Bus controllers." Click on the plus (+) sign: Do you see
anything that says smething like "USB Enhanced Host Bus Controller?"

What did you upgrade from? XP Home?

HIya G, Thanx for the quick response

Ummm yes, it does say MS WindowsXP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 1. and yes i did upgrade from XP Home since this is my personal notebook and i didn't get any error msgs when i plug in my Cruzer Mini into the USB hub. Ever since the upgrade to XP Pro, this notebook's been problematic. XP Pro couldn't detect my RADEON display adapter and i've had to reinstall XP Pro. Now, it's giving me that "Hi speed USB device is plugged into to a non hi speed USB hub" . i've downloaded and installed all the critical and recommended updates from Microsoft but the prob still persists. I read somewhere in another thread about uninstalling the driver and letting it redetect ...umm it still wont work
Currently my device manager is listing these under Universal Serial Bus Controllers
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controlle
USB Mass Storage Devic
USB Mass Storage Devic
USB Root Hu
USB Root Hu
USB Root Hu
USB Root Hu
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controlle
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controlle
VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controlle

in that order....
I don't know what else to do :

I'm baffled, Jane. Your machine DOES have USB 2.0 ports, SP1 IS installed,
the system DOES have drivers installed. I'm assuming you are plugging your
2.0 device straight into the port and not going through a hub, and it is the
only device connected. The only thing I can think of right now is that the
Pro upgrade loaded up default drivers that are not correct for your machine.
I think I would try going to the Acer site and downloading drivers from
there. Here's the site:
http://www.acersupport.com/notebook/html/fr3000_dl.html
What you want to download is the Chipser 4n1 Driver (3000chip.exe).

Try installing these new drivers and see what happens. If that doesn't
work, you will probably have to contact Acer Tech Support. Sorry I don't
have any more ideas.

HI G

I don't know what happened but I must have tweaked something correctly because the error msg hasn't appeared since. I truly appreciate all your advise and help :
