VCD/SVCD viewer

Eric

I'm looking for a freeware viewer that can read VCD and SVCD disks.

I just started learning how to make them with VCDEasy and can send the
image to a virtual CD (thanks to Virtual DAEMON). I would like some
software to test the disks before I start wasting CDs. I would really
like something smart enough to do the built-in menu systems on the
disks.

I tried a couple, but either they ONLY do DVDs or they just sweep in
the video files and play them in the order they are found (thus
skipping the menu).

Playback quality and speed are less important than menu support for my
needs.

Thanks,

Eric

Most DVD players will play VCDs & SVCDs.
What I do is use a CDRW disk for testing and then erase.

Do you have a free one you suggest? The couple I tested yesterday
wouldn't recognize the SVCD or VCD disks. And the "free" one that
came with my computer is a very limited version of a pay one so it
tells me to send money instead of running the menus.

Sorry, what I meant was a stand alone DVD player that connects to your TV.
On the computer for VCDs (not SVCDs) I use MS media player or Zoom Player
(free):
http://www.inmatrix.com/
Open Folder MPEGAV on VCD disk and click on file AVSEQ01.dat. If this does
not work, you may need a MPG codec. See this site for help (very good site):

Look for STHSVCD Player at this site for SVCDs.

Thanks for the suggestions. It looks like STHSVCD will work well
enough for me. The installation locked-up and never completed (waited
10 minutes, just in case). But the program seems to be in the
directory and functional.

It has trouble with "play forever" menu screens; just plays them once
and then quits. Otherwise, it handles the selection keys fine.

VcdEasy will convert stills (jpgs) to mpgs and burn on a CDR or CDRW to play
in stand alone DVD Player. I never tried gifs.

My daughter-in-law and I have been experimenting with Photo to VCD/SVCD
Creator (Liteware) - so far so good . . .

You can put a huge number of images on one CD.

Now at v 1.3 (downloading the new version now)

Learn from my mistakes, check out your player *first*. :)

Before making a choice for VCD or SVCD you should check the capabilities
of your DVD player. You can do this by looking at this site

http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers

-------

http://www.nu2.nu/photovcd/

Photo to VCD/SVCD Creator is a program to create a VCD or SVCD from your
JPG images (for example from your digital camera) in high resolution
(PAL 704 * 576, NTSC 704 * 480) and from your MPEG movies. You can mix
photo's and movies within the same menu.
