VCD, SVCD, XVCD, DVD

http://www.updatexp.com/codec-svcd.html

I hate optical disks !

VCD (mpeg1 encoded)
will play on my
- PC's
- DVD Players (but with no menu)
- DVD Recorders (but with no menu)

SVCD (mpeg2 encoded)
will plays on
- PC's (but with no menu)
- DVD Players (but with no menu)
- DVD Recorders (but with no menu)

XVCD (divX encoded)
will plays on
- PC's (but with no menu)
- DVD Players (but with no menu)
- DVD Recorders (but with no menu)

DVD (mpeg2 encoded)
will play on my
- PC's
- DVD Players
- DVD Recorders

Ok, the question, why dosen't the menu sometimes display on DVD players /
recorders and even some player software on PC's ?

Take WMP10 for example, I can't get menus to work.
- VCD (no menu)
- SVCD (no menu)
- XVCD (won't play)
- DVD (no menu)

Any ideas how to get the menus working in WMP10 ?

How are you authoring these DVD's? Some authoring programs have an option to
play the first clip first before the menu ( Like a commercial DVD showing
the FBI warning before you get to the menu). So if this option is selected
you maybe playing your entire clip and the menu won't show until the end.

PC:
I used WinDVD Creator which gives lots of save options,
VCD, SVCD, DVD-on-CD, DVD, etc...

The menus appear when using quality DVD player software
like WinDVD Recorder (Player), PowerDVD, etc. The
menus are fully clickable on screen menus, even when I use
more advanced authoring software with complex menus.

But all the simple freebie VCD, SVCD Players like
LalimVCD PlayerPro, XVCD Player, WMP10, etc, don't
display the menus on screen or even as navigation.

WMP10 just plays the VCD, SVCD, DVD with no navigation
or menus available. WMP10 gives me no menus for
homemade or commerical disks, never has, it just plays the
disks in full with no navagation available? I click on the
menu button near the DVD symbol but nothing happens.

DVD Players / Recorders:
As far as the standalone DVD Players / Recorders, they
only display the disk navigation menu, not the authored
menus.

I tryed the disks in the shops on about twenty DVD Players /
Recorders only about 4 showed the menus.

A few more worked, about 10, when I tested DVD on CD-
R/RW and CD+R/RW disks, most DVD Players / Recorders
just said "Incompatable Disk" or "No Disk Loaded".

Try VLC player (freeware, no ads, scumware). Not sure it will work better but
you have more control over behaviour than with WMP

I just tried a commercial dvd in WMP10 and it worked just fine. Afteer the
FBI warning it went right to the menu. I played a portion of the movie then
clicked on the menu button and it went to the menu.

Thanks at least I now know thats what should happen.

No luck, I clicked the menu button, nothing happens.

I dont know why my WMP10 won't play menus?

Now, it sometimes won't play the video or it plays the
squashed up video, like a16:9 squashed to 4:3 width, under
the following error message.

Windows Media Player cannot play the video because there
is a problem with your video card.

close win help

With only the above two buttons to click. When I click win
help button I get the errors explanation "You've encountered
error message C00D10BD while using Windows Media
Player. Additional information is not currently available for
this error."

But WinDVD plays DVD's, etc just fine, so I dont think there
is anything wrong with my videocard?

Thanks - Merlin,
Your first post was also a great suggestion, that is always a
possibility with the increasing complexity of the commerical
DVD authoring suites.

Thanks - Your Display Name,
VLC plays just the video content if I navigate to the VCD /
AVSEQ01.DAT, or SVCD / AVSEQ01.MPG files, but still
no authored interactive onscreen menus.

It appears if I want interactive onscreen clickable menus I
have to play disks with WinDVD, or PowerDVD and similar
applications.

Thanks - Your Display Name

VLC plays DVD's ok in full screen with onscreen interactive
menus, but no menus with VCD, SVCD.

Also Media Player Classic, WinDVD, PowerDVD, all play
DVD's in full screen with onscreen interactive menus.

But useless WMP10 won't play DVD's correctly, or display
the menus, I have reinstalled WMP10 several times, but it
still won't play DVD's correctly, I give up with WMP10, Not
Happy :) LOL.
